Strategic Communications and Media ManagerSouthbank VIC
The Strategic Communications and Media Manager plays a key role in supporting the achievement of the Institute's organisational purpose. Through the implementation of the Institute's Communications Strategy, this position provides strategic leadership and oversight of Communications functions and activities within the Institute. Working with senior leaders, the position supports the effective communication of AIFS research projects to relevant stakeholders, including government departments, journalists, media outlets, research organisations, non-government service providers, practitioners, and staff. An important part of this role will be building our reputation as a preeminent research organisation and the continuing implementation of our desired branding position. The role is also responsible for internal communication to support employee engagement, organisational values, and change.
The position works closely with the Executive and other managers in the Institute. To that end, this position will demonstrate leadership and collaboration with AIFS researchers and corporate managers.
About usThe Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS, or 'the Institute') is the Australian Government's key research body in the area of family wellbeing. It is an independent statutory authority established in 1980 under the Family Law Act 1975. It also houses the Australian Gambling Research Centre, established under the Gambling Measure Act 2012. The Institute is an agency within the portfolio of the Department of Social Services (DSS). We conduct research, provide independent advice, and communicate findings to government policymakers, service providers, and the community about factors affecting family wellbeing. Our work builds an evidence base about 'what works for families'.
Our teamThe Communications Team works with stakeholders to help AIFS become the leading source of accessible resources about research and evidence relating to families. Our aims are to support policy and practice, inform the broader community with research evidence, and influence national conversations about family wellbeing. To do this, we help translate research and evidence into easy-to-understand materials and publish them via our website and other platforms. We also promote our research through news media and public events. We oversee AIFS websites, intranet, social media channels, electronic newsletters, and advertising. As part of our external communication efforts, we manage the organisation's reputational risk, government relations, and brand identity. We also manage internal communications to help build a cohesive and positive culture in which staff are well informed about organisational initiatives, positively engaged, and working together.
Position RequirementsThe position supports and contributes to increasing the impact of AIFS by providing expert professional and specialist media services which contribute to AIFS' overall communications and marketing strategy. The position provides high-level media advice and coaching/mentoring across the organisation as well as managing the media response of potential reputational risks.
The position is responsible for building and maintaining trusted relationships between AIFS and journalists and other media professionals, along with writing and editing media/communications materials, such as media releases, web copy, fact sheets, social media posts, and scripts. The position is also responsible for identifying and managing the media risks associated with AIFS' complex activities and issues.
The Strategic Communications and Media Manager is part of the Senior Leadership Group (SLG).
The key duties of the position include:Under the direction of the Head of Communications, this position is required to: Provide strategic leadership and oversight of Communications functions and activities for the Institute including:Leading the development, implementation, and review of the Institute's integrated communications strategyLeading and managing the Institute's media relations activity, including management of media relationships and close co-ordination with Ministerial media advisersDriving the optimisation of internal and external communications channels so that the Institute reaches its target audiencesProviding strategic leadership and management of the Institute's online platforms and social media channelsLead the development of the corporate reporting publications: the Corporate Plan and the Annual Report.Lead and manage an outcomes-focused Communications team that is committed to the timely delivery of high-quality communication services.Provide leadership that promotes employee engagement through the communication of clear expectations, providing clear and consistent communication and feedback, and timely and effective resolution of issues and concerns.Champion a business partner culture within the Communications Team, which focuses on providing solutions that are responsive and creative and forges collaborative relationships within the Institute.Provide expert communications advice and support to the Institute's Director, Executive, and managers on the design, development, and implementation of a range of internal and external communication products and activities.Identify and develop plans to mitigate reputational risks to the Institute.Actively promote a culture where AIFS' Values and Behaviours, APS Values, Employment Principles, and Code of Conduct are promoted and applied within the Communications Team and workplace.Collaborate with the AIFS Privacy team to incorporate privacy practices into work undertaken within the team.Key Selection CriteriaProfessional expertiseUnderstanding our organisationDelivering on objectives and achieving resultsRelationships and interpersonal skillsCommunicationLeadership and managementValues and integrityFor a comprehensive overview of the selection criteria, please see the Position Description for more information.

TermsThe Strategic Communications and Media Manager role will be offered as a full-time ongoing position at the Executive Level 2 level. This will be with a salary range of between $132,105 to $154,872, depending on the skills and experience of the successful applicant, plus 15.4% superannuation.
