Full time Irrigation Automation Manager based in Sunraysia, Vic Phytech have grown to become the largest IoT Agtech service provider in Australia. The Phytech service centres around a range of proprietary plant and environmental sensors, along with cloud-based algorithms, that enable growers to view the real-time irrigation needs of their crops. Data is collected and analysed automatically, then displayed to the grower using a simple smartphone and web interface. This leads to improved water use efficiency, optimised yields and higher quality produce. Phytech has also expanded into the irrigation automation sector, providing growers with the ability to remotely program their irrigation system. The business model is "as-a-service" for both hardware and software, whereby the client pays a seasonal subscription fee rather than purchasing the specialised hardware and software themselves. Target irrigated crops include almonds, citrus, avocado, pistachio, stone fruit & grapes. Due to business growth, a new opportunity exists for a Sunraysia based Irrigation Automation Technician to join the team.
Role Summary: Based in the greater Mildura area, the Automation Manager will primarily be servicing the Sunraysia & Riverland regions, with a secondary responsibility to support other regions within Australia. Reporting to the General Manager, the primary objective of this role is to perform systems reviews & surveys, planning HW required to automate these systems, facilitating the installations, monitor operations and perform maintenance of cloud-controlled irrigation and hydraulic systems. They will work regularly with low voltage electrical components, hydraulic controls, and other electro-mechanical devices (valves, pumps, filters, chemical injectors, etc.).
Responsibilities: Install irrigation and other hydraulic controllers, including radios, solar panels, antennas, antenna masts and valve solenoids. Install conduit (trenching when necessary) and run wire to interconnect devices. Troubleshoot components and processes, replace defective hardware, and test functionality before leaving a site. Calibrate sensors and ensure water meters, level probes and other devices report accurate values. Test valves, pumps, and other outputs for proper functionality. Provide remote and on-site support, and in rare cases, respond to emergency support calls on weekends. Train customers on the use of the system once it is automated. You must be able to demonstrate an ability to learn new concepts, as well as analytical and problem-solving skills, delivered in a professional manner. The company will provide you with the necessary training and support so you can learn how the Phytech solution works. You must be willing and able to work outside in an orchard or vineyard environment. You will be exposed to a wide range of physical movement (bending, kneeling, reaching, etc.). You must be able to use a wide range of power tools and equipment. You may be required to work after hours or weekends on occasion. Regular daily travel throughout the Sunraysia & Riverland regions, and infrequent travel to other regions that may require up to two weeks away from home. You must maintain a valid Australian driver's license. An understanding of horticultural irrigation operation, maintenance or design is a prerequisite. Experience working with, or for, horticultural organizations will be highly regarded. A formal qualification in electrical, electronics, engineering, hydraulics or agriculture will be highly regarded. A salary commensurate with experience, plus a company vehicle, phone, computer and superannuation is on offer. Strong written and oral communication skills. Experience in maintaining and enhancing customer relationships. Adaptability to changing priorities and work environments. Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
A willingness to work outdoors year-round and travel frequently. Ability to complete assigned tasks within time constraints and manage seasonal workload peaks.
