Where you'll be working
The NSW Sexually Transmissible Infections Programs Unit (STIPU) sits within the Centre of Population Health, NSW Ministry of Health. A main aim is to implement the NSW STI and HIV strategies. These strategies aim to reduce HIV and STIs and associated morbidity and mortality in NSW. This is achieved through the delivery of state-wide population level sexual health programs, working with public and private health systems to build the capacity for prevention, treatment and management of STIs, and working with priority populations and priority settings.
NSW STIPU provides leadership and expertise in the areas of evidence-based sexual health clinical practice and health promotion, harm reduction and community engagement. The Unit also develops strategic partnerships with key agencies and stakeholders across the health system and in whole of government settings.
The Unit's primary purpose is to develop, implement and evaluate sexual health promotion programs which:
Support delivery of best practice and innovative sexual health services; Use a community engagement framework; Build programs that focus on behaviour change or system change; Incorporate social marketing campaigns; and to Provide high level policy advice concerning STIs and sexual health promotion. NSW STIPU maintains key relationships across the NSW Local health Districts, Ministry of Health, NGO partners, GP and Aboriginal Community controlled organisations in order to perform its role.
The Role
The purpose of the position is to focus on communities and priority populations to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate sexual health programs that build the capacity of services to deliver best practice clinical services and/or evidence based health promotion programs to the people of NSW.
NSW priority populations include Aboriginal people, young people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities and people with HIV.
A key focus of this position is to lead and support Aboriginal Sexual health programs across NSW. This will include the need to engage with the Aboriginal Community Controlled health services sector and Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Centre, as well as other partners. The nature of the STI Programs Unit (STIPU) requires that the position remain open to future changes in direction in order to deliver the aims and objectives of current and future NSW Strategies.

Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and evaluating programs and/or communication strategies to address sexual health issues or other public health issues. Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal Communities. Sound knowledge of social, cultural, political and health issues affecting Aboriginal people, families and communities and demonstrated understanding of the social determinants of Aboriginal Health. High level project management experience using evidence based practice, service design and/or health promotion models to achieve change. High level negotiation skills, including verbal and written communication skills. Ability to influence and persuade diverse audiences, including sexual health services, the general public, government, partner agencies and non-government organisations. Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision and in a team environment. Appropriate tertiary qualifications and experience in a health related field, community services or demonstrated equivalent relevant professional experience. Current Drivers licence and willingness to travel across NSW to meet the demands of the position. Need more information?
