The Africa Business Unit manages four operations in Tanzania, Ghana and Guinea producing in excess of 1.1 Moz per year. The Business Unit Technical team is a small, dedicated team of technical and operational specialists based in Australia who provide direct support to the operations.

Reporting to the VP – Technical (Africa) , the Senior Manager Mining is accountable for providing open pit and underground mining technical support, leadership, guidance, and mine planning in the Africa Business Unit.
This position requires on-site presence with quarterly travel to the operations. Applicants should be prepared for international travel, spending 30% of time away attending sites . This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to be based in Perth and have the ability to travel and work in Africa in diverse and challenging operations.
Accountabilities: Providing expert and specialist mining support to the operations which include engaging internal CTO specialists or industry service providers. This role will act as the single point of contact for open pit and underground mining operational support in the Business Unit. Developing and maintaining Full Potential processes to measure cost and operational performance for the operations. This includes developing performance measures and monitoring key metrics to identify improvement opportunities. Providing technical input and support to mining contracts. This includes being part of the Alliance Management Teams as directed by the Business Unit leadership team. Delivering Mine Planning services and support to the Africa operations. This includes developing, enhancing, and supporting designated fit-for-purpose mine planning systems and ensuring the systems are operating effectively with results analysed and reported appropriately. Accountable for the development of strategic mine plans for the African operations to assist with portfolio decisions and ensure alignment with corporate processes and guidance. Coordinating and participating in the annual Business Planning cycle. This includes contributing to and reviewing Quarterly Integrated Plans, identifying risks and mitigating actions as well as monitoring progress against budgeted/forecast performance. Delivering fully costed Life-of-Mine plans for the operations in the Africa Business Unit that optimise value and underpin the Mineral Reserve declaration. Aligned with the AGA Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserves reporting process, lead the reporting of Ore Reserves for the Africa Business Unit by providing support to the Qualified Persons and acting as the Business Unit Reviewer, which includes providing technical sign-off. Coordinating and supporting the mining components of Studies and Projects as assigned within the Africa Business Unit. Identify and interpret safety risks and resolve emerging issues; and ensuring that appropriate focus and resources are available to achieve safety objectives. Leading BU mining assurance and governance by auditing onsite compliance to guidelines, standards, procedures, processes, and specifications. Where deviations are encountered assist the sites to develop strategies and plans to ensure compliance. About You People are at the heart of everything we do. A degree qualification in a relevant mining-related discipline or other. Minimum 15 years relevant experience in the mining industry including open pit and underground operations. Preferably 5 years experience as an operational HOD. Sound practical understanding of the entire mining value chain including geology, mining, geotechnical, metallurgy and projects. Operational experience in open pit and underground mining including mining contract management. Demonstrated experience in mine planning – optimisation, design and scheduling. Experience in Mineral Reserve estimation and reporting. Ability to take a whole-of-business perspective in managing multiple competing priorities and reconciling these with the Company's strategic priorities. Demonstrated capacity to make sound short-term tactical decisions – quickly assembling and interpreting data to successfully action priorities. Demonstrated capacity in financial decision making and Risk Management. A strong commitment towards leading a safe work culture. Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with people at all levels within the organisation. The ability to obtain a National Police Clearance. Have existing and ongoing valid Australian working rights (Mandatory).
