Description The Role - Public Affairs Consultant SEC Newgate's Canberra team is seeking an experienced public affairs professional to work on projects that help clients make a meaningful impact. We're interested in candidates with varying levels of experience in federal or state government (political office or department), a media organisation, a peak body, or a corporate affairs function within a business.
As a member of SEC Newgate's Communications team, you will have the opportunity to address complex issues for government, not-for-profit, and corporate clients. You will play a crucial role in providing clients with integrated solutions to navigate challenging public affairs landscapes – including strategy development and implementation, issues management, government relations, organisational reviews, media relations, community and stakeholder engagement, market and social research, and digital communications.
We are looking for a high-performing consultant who is: Politically savvy - deep understanding of the political landscape, policy development process, and media dynamics. Collaborative and adaptable - bring a can-do attitude, flexibility, and excellent interpersonal skills. Curious and proactive - able to identify and pursue innovative ideas to advance client projects. Calm and dedicated - maintain composure under pressure, with a good sense of humour, while managing multiple deadlines across various practice areas. Leadership and teamwork-oriented - capable of leading projects and collaborating effectively within client teams. Practical skills and experience should include: Experience and interest in Public Affairs, with a background in government, peak bodies, media, or corporate roles. Relevant tertiary qualifications in Communications, Public Relations, Politics, or Social Science. A genuine interest in politics, communications, current affairs, and the media, with established networks in these areas. Strong writing abilities – confident in crafting clear and concise communications. Analytical skills to distil complex information into clear, actionable insights. Exceptional organisational skills – adept at managing your workflow, prioritising tasks, and implementing communications plans. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and listening skills. Established networks across government, bureaucracy, and/or media. A positive attitude with a good sense of humour. About Us SEC Newgate Australia
