WSLHD - Provisional Fellow, Obstetrics - Anaesthesia Employment Type : Temporary Various Remuneration : - Hours Per Week : 38 Requisition ID : CAM22051 Provisional Fellow Obstetric Anaesthesia Where you'll be working Westmead Hospital, located in Western Sydney, is a key facility within the Westmead Health Precinct, one of Australia's largest health and medical research precincts. Westmead Hospital is the principal referral hospital for Western Sydney Local Health District. It provides district level health services to Parramatta, Holroyd, and The Hills Shire Local Government Areas (LGAs), tertiary referral services for Auburn, Blacktown, and Mount Druitt Hospitals, and quaternary services to greater Western Sydney, greater metropolitan Sydney, rural NSW, and other Australian states. Westmead Hospital is a leading centre of research, training and specialisation in all fields of Medicine, Surgery and Oral Health, providing services in Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Urological, ENT, Plastic surgery, Upper GIT surgery, Hepatobiliary surgery, Kidney and Pancreas transplantation, Colorectal surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neonatal Intensive Care, Trauma, Cancer Care, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Critical Care, Aged Care and Rehabilitation, Adult Acute Psychiatry (networked with the co-located Cumberland Hospital), as well as other specialised medical and surgical services. Westmead Hospital serves a culturally diverse population who have an extensive range of complex clinical conditions. Co-located within the precinct, is The Children's Hospital at Westmead, which has close links with the obstetric, anaesthetic and NICU departments at Westmead Hospital. Westmead Hospital's continued drive to innovative, as well as providing contemporary and integrated care, enable it to deliver to high quality healthcare, whilst expanding education, health, and research capabilities. Westmead Hospital's obstetric unit provides care for over 5000 delivers per year and is NSW's largest high-risk obstetric unit. What you'll be doing The provisional fellow will work closely with specialist high-risk obstetric anaesthetists, feto-maternal medicine obstetricians, high-risk midwives, and various physicians with a subspecialty interest in obstetrics. You will work in the fortnightly High Risk obstetric Anaesthetic Clinic (HRAC) alongside specialist high-risk obstetric anaesthetists to assess mothers with a diverse range of comorbidities including cardiac, neurological, haematological, musculoskeletal, abnormal placentation and rare genetic syndromes. You will be involved and participate in multidisciplinary meetings to collaboratively formulate antenatal and peri-partum management plans facilitating safe delivery and communicate these plans to all obstetric anaesthetists within the department. The provisional fellow will also be involved with the provision of anaesthesia services covering Birth Unit, Obstetric, Gynaecological, Gynaecological Oncology as well as general operative lists. You will have the opportunity to implement the management plans formulated in the HRAC for high-risk obstetric patients. As the provisional fellow, numerous opportunities exist for you to be for involved with quality improvement, audit and research activities involving obstetric anaesthesia. The obstetric anaesthesia subspeciality group is a supportive, experienced, and largest subspecialty department within Westmead Anaesthesia at Westmead Hospital. It has an active teaching program with opportunities for learning, as well as the provision of teaching to junior trainees, the broader anaesthetic department, midwives, and obstetricians. The close links with The Children's Hospital at Westmead, means the fellow will also be involved in the care of mothers pregnant with fetuses needing advanced anaesthetic techniques for safe fetal delivery (Ex-Utero Intrapartum Treatment – EXIT procedures) and advanced post-delivery care, many of whom will come from rural NSW. Summary Working in a well-supported, experienced, and enthusiastic clinical unit of Westmead Anaesthesia. Involved in the provision of care for over 5,000 deliveries per year. Anaesthesia for all surgical specialties provided at Westmead Hospital with a focus on Obstetric, Gynae-oncology and Gynaecological operating lists (elective and emergency). Collaborative care planning with O&G for high-risk mothers. Reviewing of cases in the high-risk obstetric clinic (HRAC) followed by management of these patients during pregnancy and delivery. Co-ordination with the Children's Hospital Westmead for foetuses with complex congenital conditions requiring surgery on delivery (e.g., EXIT procedures). Participate in the teaching of junior trainees, residents, and medical students. Participate in obstetric emergency multidisciplinary simulation team training including obstetricians and midwives. Participate in the research activities of the department Participate in the onsite afterhours roster of trainees of the department (evenings, nights, and weekends). SELECTION CRITERIA: MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category Completed four years of accredited anaesthetic training with ANZCA Successfully completed the final part ANZCA examination. Able to work in Anaesthesia under supervision and to work weekends and after-hours in the specialty area and work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilizing excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise Adept ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services. Adept verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences Must be able to provide excellent references from current consultant supervisors including the Head of Department. Commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of anaesthesia and a demonstrated interest in clinical audit or research.
