WSLHD - Provisional Fellow, Neuro - Anaesthesia Employment Type : Temporary Various Remuneration : - Hours Per Week : 38 Requisition ID : CAM22059 Neuroanaesthesia Provisional Fellowship The Westmead neuroanaesthesia fellowship offers the selected provisional fellow the opportunity to develop and finesse their clinical skills in this exciting field. There are daily neurosurgical lists across both public and private campuses which provide access to a complex and challenging case mix. It includes: • Neurovascular interventions (open and endovascular) • Awake craniotomies for deep brain stimulation • Neuro-oncological treatment • Simple and complex spine surgery including minimally invasive and robotic techniques • Traumatic brain and spine injury treatment • Neuroanaesthesia in the comorbid patient population You will work with a friendly and dynamic group of anaesthetists, with keen interests in education, research, and professional development, as well as expert and friendly neurosurgical, neuro-interventional and neurology specialists and their teams. Our Westmead Neuroanaesthesia Special Interest Group also includes anaesthetists trained in intraoperative neuromonitoring. Fellows will have the opportunity to learn about the various modalities and their increasing applications. There is also the potential for partial or full scholarships for select successful applicants to undertake the Professional Certificate in Intraoperative Neuromonitoring offered online by the University of Sydney. Non-clinically, fellows may choose to participate in audits and research in the neuroanaesthetic field or beyond. Alternatively, they may want to get involved in the many teaching activities available within our department. This is a stimulating and evolving fellowship at Westmead which affords the fellow the flexibility to customise the year according to their priorities. At the conclusion of the clinical year, the fellow will graduate with the subspeciality expertise necessary for a successful consultant career in neuroanaesthesia. Where you'll be working Westmead Hospital is a key facility of one of Australia's largest major health and medical research precincts and is the principal referral hospital for Western Sydney Local Health District providing district level health services to Parramatta, Holroyd and The Hills Shire LGAs including tertiary and quaternary services to greater Western Sydney, greater metropolitan Sydney, rural NSW and other states. The Westmead Health Precinct currently under development is envisaged to be the largest hospital building project undertaken in Western Sydney and will transform the iconic but ageing Westmead Hospital into an innovative, contemporary, and integrated centre that will continue to deliver high quality healthcare and expand the education, health, and research capability of the area. Westmead Hospital is a leading centre of research, training and specialisation in all fields of Medicine and Dentistry, providing services in Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Kidney and Pancreas transplantation, Cancer Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neonatal Intensive Care, Trauma, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Critical Care, Aged Care and Rehabilitation, Adult Acute Psychiatry (networked with the co-located Cumberland Hospital) as well as other specialised medical and surgical services. Westmead Hospital is also the principal referral centre for other metropolitan hospitals within the district including Auburn Hospital, Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital. The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine provides anaesthesia services for approximately 25000 procedures per year. Approximately 5000 patients are assessed preoperatively in the preadmission clinics and the obstetric service performs over 5000 deliveries per year. The acute pain service saw over 3000 patients last year and the trauma team attended over 500 calls. What you'll be doing Providing anaesthesia, resuscitation, pain management and perioperative care for complex patients undergoing a wide range of neurosurgical procedures and other procedures Learning about various intraoperative neuromonitoring modalities, their indications, advantages and pitfalls, with a view to eventually providing this service in tandem with neuroanaesthesia Participating in perioperative management of neurosurgical patients in the intensive care unit and neuroanaesthesia high dependency unit Contributing to preadmission clinic, obstetric cover and pain rounds Handling surgical and medical emergencies in and out of hours with dedicated multidisciplinary teams Contributing to the extensive teaching programs in an area of your interest including to colleagues, trainees, JMOs medical students and nursing staff Supervising and training more junior trainees and SRMOs Employee Benefits • Fitness Passport, Salary Packaging For Further Information • Please refer to the Position Description. SELECTION CRITERIA: MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category Completed four years of accredited anaesthetic training with ANZCA Successfully completed the final part ANZCA examination. Able to work in Anaesthesia under supervision and to work weekends and after-hours in the specialty area and work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilizing excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise Adept ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services. Adept verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences Must be able to provide excellent references from current consultant supervisors including the Head of Department. Commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of anaesthesia and a demonstrated interest in clinical audit or research.
