WSLHD - Provisional Fellow, Simulation - Anaesthesia Employment Type : Temporary Various Remuneration : - Hours Per Week : 38 Requisition ID : CAM22057 Provisional Fellow in Simulation As the Simulation and Education provisional fellow at Westmead Hospital you will be working in one of the largest tertiary Hospitals in Australia. You will provide education via various modalities including simulation to the anaesthetic department, critical care teams and the hospital in general. You will be working in the SiLECT simulation centre at Westmead which oversees education and simulation for the whole hospital. The departmental simulation teaching occurs monthly. The scope of this teaching ranges from after-hours registrar teaching, in hours SRMO teaching and quick skills based sessions for consultants and trainees. There is scope for you to be involved in other teaching that occurs within the department such as part one or two exam preparation. Hospital wide teaching you will be involved in occurs throughout the year and includes ALS courses, Trauma team training, DETECT courses and resident teaching. Courses created for consultant anaesthetists not hospital specific include SMAART (difficult airway course), One Lung Ventilation and ERA (emergency response activities). You will be mentored throughout the year by highly skilled educators and simulation instructors (from anaesthetics and other departments) and there is an expectation that you will complete a simulation instructor course. This can be via our internal instructor course or via an external course. We are very open to expanding our education sessions and create new content. Where you'll be working Westmead Hospital is a key facility of one of Australia's largest major health and medical research precincts and is the principal referral hospital for Western Sydney Local Health District providing district level health services to Parramatta, Holroyd and The Hills Shire LGAs including tertiary and quaternary services to greater Western Sydney, greater metropolitan Sydney, rural NSW and other states. The Westmead Health Precinct currently under development is envisaged to be the largest hospital building project undertaken in Western Sydney and will transform the iconic but ageing Westmead Hospital into an innovative, contemporary, and integrated centre that will continue to deliver high quality healthcare and expand the education, health, and research capability of the area. Westmead Hospital is a leading centre of research, training and specialisation in all fields of Medicine and Dentistry, providing services in Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Kidney and Pancreas transplantation, Cancer Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neonatal Intensive Care, Trauma, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Critical Care, Aged Care and Rehabilitation, Adult Acute Psychiatry (networked with the co-located Cumberland Hospital) as well as other specialised medical and surgical services. Westmead Hospital is also the principal referral centre for other metropolitan hospitals within the district including Auburn Hospital, Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital. Intensive care service in Westmead hospital includes 36 general, and 10 post cardiothoracic surgical ICU beds. General ICU bed numbers have expanded by 50% in early 2020. Cardiothoracic ICU has also recently moved into a newly built ICU pod. Common ICU admissions include complex medical cases such as sepsis, severe respiratory or cardiac failure, complicated bone marrow transplant, and surgical cases including trauma, neurosurgery, vascular, cardiothoracic, ENT, plastic surgery, urology, upper GI, hepatobiliary, and colorectal procedures. What you'll be doing As the SiLECT simulation and education anaesthetic provisional fellow you will be assigned nonclinical time to simulation and education roughly 1-2 days a week. This is dependent on the courses running throughout the year. The SiLECT fellow with be involved in teaching programs: ALS team training, DETECT, SMAART (Westmead difficult airway course), One lung course, Trauma team training, RADD (registrar airway development day), TED (trauma education day for registrars), JMO teaching, medical student teaching. The fellow will be required to participate in an instructor course. The fellow will run the monthly anaesthetic simulation teaching session under the supervision of a simulation consultant. There is scope to create new content dependent on the needs of the hospital and the department, with the help of motivated, skilled educators. SELECTION CRITERIA: MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category Completed four years of accredited anaesthetic training with ANZCA Successfully completed the final part ANZCA examination. Able to work in Anaesthesia under supervision and to work weekends and after-hours in the specialty area and work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilizing excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise Adept ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services. Adept verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences Must be able to provide excellent references from current consultant supervisors including the Head of Department. Commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of anaesthesia and a demonstrated interest in clinical audit or research.
