18th December, 2024 Purpose / Objective The Asylum Seekers Centre's (ASC) Health Program provides free access to healthcare support, particularly for people without Medicare eligibility.
The aim of the program is to reduce the burden faced by people seeking asylum to access essential medical care, as well as connecting and referring people to specialist services in the general community.
The program runs a weekly General Practice Clinic, where services are delivered by Pro Bono General Practitioners (GPs) and clinics are managed by ASC's team of registered nurses.
Commitment Period: Minimum 3 months Days and hours required per week: Once a week - 4 hours a week.
Days and times can be negotiated.
Duties & Responsibilities Run weekly/fortnightly general practice clinics at ASC Newtown Engage with people seeking asylum who have no access to medical support Working collaboratively with ASC Management, conduct advocacy for increased access to health services at an individual and systemic level Escalate access issues and matters which require an ASC/sector response to address barriers to healthcare access Connect with other professionals and health providers willing to provide pro-bono services for the people we support Expand the network of GPs and providers in the Sydney metropolitan region who offer pro-bono services.
Participate in continuing education and quality improvement Selection Criteria Registered General Practitioner Has own Professional Medical Indemnity insurance Experience working with CALD patients Experience working with Translating Services Intermediate computer skills (confidence in using the internet and emails) Ability to work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers Flexibility and willingness to take on extra tasks as appropriate Ability to adhere to policies in relation to code of conduct, boundaries and confidentiality Experience working with people who have experienced torture and/or trauma and who have mental health concerns Ability to work with people who have been denied access to quality health care for years.
