About the Role
As a PLC Programmer, you will be responsible for designing, programming, testing, modifying and commissioning PLC systems for hybrid (renewable and thermal) off-grid power systems in the 15-150MW capacity range.
What You Will Do:
Develop, Configure Test Control Algorithms for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), solar, wind and thermal power generation in hybrid power station environments. Integrate renewable energy sources (e.g., solar, wind) with conventional thermal generation and energy storage systems. Design logic for automatic load shedding and load reservation in response to demand and generation imbalances. Configure communication protocols (Modbus, IEC 61850) between Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and SCADA systems. Integrate power meters (e.g., Acuvim, SEL 735) into the control system to capture real-time data for control functions. Implement safety and E-stop Logic to protect equipment and personnel. Provide input in the development of ITPs & ITRs. Commission, Debug, and Validate Control Systems operate as per design. Provide technical support to our operations team when required. This position is based at our 'State of the Art' Rivervale offices with travel to site when required for the commissioning stage of the projects.
About You:
As the PLC Programmer you will have the following experience, knowledge, and skills to bring to the role.
Experience
Experience in the design and commissioning of hybrid power systems, integrating renewable energy sources and thermal and renewables. Proficient in PLC programming, especially for energy management functions (e.g., in ladder logic, structured text). Experience with protocols like Modbus, IEC 61850, and DNP3 for communication between system components. Familiar with SCADA and remote monitoring control systems. Skilled in real-time energy balancing, dispatch algorithms, and managing frequency and voltage control in microgrids or hybrid systems. Familiar with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) protection relays and software. Knowledge/Skills/Ability
Strong troubleshooting skills in system fault detection and resolution, particularly related to BESS and generator control systems. Ability to prepare technical service documents and reports. Understanding of electrical schematic drawings. Qualifications & Clearances
