Permanent Emergency & Critical Care Senior Clinician - QueenslandType: Small AnimalLocation: Townsville, QueenslandPractice: This Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a controlled entity of a local University, operating independently while providing clinical training to 5th-year veterinary students. It houses five disciplines - General Practice, Emergency & Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Anaesthesia (Referral Services), employing approximately 85-90 staff.Role: This position provides excellence in Veterinary emergency and critical care medicine and surgery for small animals. The role focuses on diagnosing and managing diseases, traumatic injuries, and critical illnesses, performing and supervising medical and surgical treatments, and providing information and advice to clients and veterinarians. A strong emphasis will be placed on teaching students, nurses, and less experienced veterinarians.Duties:The role will be flexible and evolving as the employee develops further skills and experience, documented through regular review and discussion.Work within the protocols of the Vet hospital and contribute to continual improvement and refining of appropriate protocols and practices that support the hospital's mission and values.Encourage and act in ways that build a collegiate, supportive, and rewarding learning environment.Clinical Veterinary Work - Including management duties.Clinical Veterinary Teaching - Providing clinical teaching, mentoring, support, marking, and assessment of veterinary students in the teaching hospital via delivery of clinical practice, group tutoring, and individual one-on-one sessions, including remediation of students if necessary.Hours: 38-hour week over a monthly roster, typically 3 long shifts per week, with every other weekend off, including a combination of days, nights, and swing shifts.Qualifications, Licenses, and Memberships:Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) or equivalent registerable degree.Current registration with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of QLD.MANZCVS (ECC).Radiological License with Queensland Health.QFever Immunization.Senior First Aid Certificate (or ability to acquire).Recover CPR training, or willingness to obtain.Skills and Experience:Extensive ECC veterinary experience, in accordance with the JCU Vet ECC Veterinarian Competency List.Significant exposure to physical trauma, shock, respiratory problems, cardiac problems, neurological issues, and other illnesses requiring immediate and intensive care.Advanced knowledge of best-practice surgical and anaesthesia procedures.High-level diagnostic, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.Well-developed organisational skills, with the ability to multi-task efficiently.Experienced in low-stress animal handling techniques.Sound computer and administrative skills.A strong interest in and aptitude for teaching emergency and critical care.Experience in ECC veterinary teaching in the context of authentic clinical service delivery.Person Specification:Excellent relationship-building skills and ability to quickly develop rapport with clients and teams.Encouraging, courteous, and non-judgmental interactions with peers and other team members.Enthusiastic with a positive attitude to work, management, and challenges.Ability to multi-task effectively between clinical practice and student teaching.Compassionate and caring approach to animals and their owners.Resilient and able to effectively manage the pressures of a fast-paced environment.Commitment to continuing professional development and lifelong learning.Salary: Salary will depend on skills and experience. An experienced ECC Clinician (6-10 years as a dedicated ECC vet, ability to work solo in emergencies, with ECC membership) can expect a salary range of $150,000 – $170,000.The annualised salary covers working irregular hours and includes up to 8 reasonable additional hours per fortnight.
