The medical services across the North West region of Tasmania are based primarily at the North West Regional Hospital in Burnie and at the Mersey Community Hospital in Latrobe.
The population of the area is approximately 116,000 within a total Tasmanian population of around 500,000.
The Tasmanian Health Service – North West provides both acute and sub-acute services.
The maternity unit, housing the birthing suite and all inpatient maternity patients for the region, is located at North West Private Hospital in Burnie, with antenatal and postnatal services offered.
There are approximately 1000 births annually and staffing includes experienced midwives.
High risk births are managed in conjunction with the Launceston General Hospital (LGH) and Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) supported by the local endocrinology and diabetic teams.
The unit is supported by a Level 4 Neonatal Unit and an 8 bed Level 4 Intensive Care Unit.
Requirements
Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (FRANZCOG) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA or New Zealand.
The Medical Board of Australia is establishing a new expedited pathway to specialist registration, eliminating the need for a specialist assessment with a specialist medical college for those with an accepted qualification.
The list of accepted qualifications will be published shortly, with the new pathway available from December 2024.
