About our client...
Our client is an  iconic governing sporting body , who oversee one of the largest team sports in Victoria including the promotion, administration and delivery of sporting activities across the state. Their passionate team of 80 staff, who genuinely have a love for this sport, help to deliver over 40,000 matches every season! They are also enjoying huge success and exciting times at a national level, with a world class head office located 15km North/East of CBD.

With a number of key senior appointments and further growth expected in the next 12 months, they are now seeking to appoint an experienced Member Protection Officer & (Senior) Legal Counsel/Commercial Lawyer (envisage 5-10 years PAE) to their dedicated team.

About this role...
Reporting to the Head of Integrity and Governance, this will be an  autonomous role  and is the contact point for managing member protection and legal issues. It is expected that the individual provides accurate and timely legal advice to the Board, the CEO, Executive Team and Management across commercial issues.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Member Protection (approx. 60% of the role)
Primary handling of member protection and child safety
Receipt of complaints, management of complaint handling process, triage and investigation of cases
Undertaking preliminary investigations and preparing reports
Assist in the creation and moderation of internal governance policies and compliance as they relate to the Rules of the Game and processes
Liaising with their national member protection team
Interacting with GDT team
(Senior)* Legal Counsel (approx. 40% of the role)
Provision of high quality and timely legal advice on all aspects of operations appropriate to the commercial needs of the organisation
Reviewing commercial contracts
Advising on and assisting with management of litigation and dispute resolution
Contract and risk management reporting
Supporting the preparation of education sessions
Keep abreast of developments in sports law and commercial law
*Senior title will be determined based on seniority of successful candidate.

This is a  full time position , with flexibility to work some days from home.

About you...
To be successful in this role, you will have:

Essential skills and experience
Working knowledge of principles and developments of sport integrity and child safety
Prior experience in member protection or a complaints handling/dispute resolution/mediation role or with the police
Prior experience in receiving and managing triage calls for complaints or disputes in either sports, sexual assault, harassment, or crime
Empathetic, trauma-informed approach to complaints resolution and handling
The ability to undertake forensic investigations in an analytical and comprehensive manner
At least 5-10 years PAE experience working in commercial law within an in-house environment or law firm
Experience reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts
Degree in Law – LLB; Admitted as a Legal Practitioner in Victoria with an unrestricted current practising certificate
Our ideal candidate will possess the following:
Ideally, some litigation experience
Outstanding organisational skills and demonstrated experience of ethical and integrity-based leadership
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
Outstanding verbal and written skills that focus on key drivers and strategic outcomes
Current Working With Childrens' Check
Previous experience as lawyer in Sporting organisation or sporting industry experience will be highly regarded but is not essential.
