Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation (BAC) is a progressive Aboriginal corporation based in Maningrida that employs over 200 people.
We represent and assist over 4000 Aboriginal people in the 32 homelands surrounding Maningrida in West Arnhem Land.
Our work is carried out in the context of people's traditional lands, cultural practices, and languages.
Our services include new building and maintenance, road maintenance, arts, community development programs, collection of wild foods, and many more.
This position is responsible for Homelands Indigenous Protected Areas, Working on Country, Contracts and Wildlife teams within BAC.
It operates under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer in accordance with BAC plans, policies, relevant legislation and funding requirements.
Primary Responsibilities are: Lead and coordinate the Bawinanga Homelands Djelk Ranger Program across the Djelk Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) located in West Arnhem Land.Manage and support the Ranger Coordinators to achieve the KPI's as detailed in funded programs and the Healthy Country Work Plans.Develop collaborative partnerships with traditional owners and other agencies to achieve outcomes on land and sea country.Manage the Ranger program finances ensuring grant funding is expended correctly in accordance with the terms and conditions of external funding agencies and within budget.Ensure the resources and assets of the Ranger programs are managed effectively and in accordance with the corporation's policies and procedures.Provide strategic advice to Executive Management on the direction of ranger work, potential outcomes, benefits and challenges.Oversee the Carbon Credit Controlled Burning Fire Management producers contract with ALFA and implement a fire management plan for wildfires occurring later in the year.Support land owners to make informed decisions regarding the management of their land by facilitating knowledge sharing and providing expert advice where required.Strengthen career development pathways and identify support needs for ranger staff and attend to gender equity within the staffing structure.Monitor and analyse the current and future needs of the Ranger and IPA programs and provide recommendations for future program growth.Attend to program reporting and work planning needs, provide regular reports to the CEO.Develop appropriate management tools to help facilitate effective day to day operations as required.Maintain effective liaison with other operational sections within the corporation.Attend to other duties as directed by the CEO.SELECTION CRITERIA: Demonstrated experience at a senior executive level working in a culturally inclusive workplace using the principles and practices of cultural competence and providing responsive services to an indigenous community;Demonstrated respect and understanding of cultural practices and indigenous rangers' roles within their clan outside of the workplace and their cultural responsibility to country,Demonstrated ability to liaise with stakeholders and develop trusting strong relationships with Traditional Owners.Prior experience managing and coordinating Aerial Prescribed Burning carbon programs, including the Savannah Burning methodology and managing fire fighting teams in remote areas with limited access and resources; able to produce flight lines and fire maps for APB with GIS software whilst understanding the nature of early dry season fires in northern Australia;Knowledge and understanding of legislation/ regulation requirements for marine vessels operating in the marine environment of Northern Australia.Prior experience managing and creating new environmental projects such as large-scale feral animal control, fire management, weed management; conservation areas.The ability to coordinate and support multiple teams at once with each conducting different jobs/tasks and provide a high level of logistical support to rangers on country and hold SAR responsibilities;Experience in managing finances reporting on Grants and monitoring of budgets to comply with financial requirements.Have a Coxswain CertificateExperience living and working in remote communities.Experience and/or knowledge of Aboriginal culture and communities and how they operate.Experience working for a community development or not-for-profit organisation.
