AICIS Principal Scientists are primarily responsible for providing scientific leadership in chemistry, toxicology and risk assessment, operating in a matrix style to deliver their responsibilities across the whole organisation. The role of the principal scientists include providing expert advise to support assessment, evaluation and inventory activities as required, horizon scanning to identify and prepare for upcoming regulatory science issues with potential to impact AICIS activities and working in collaboration with directors to develop and maintain contemporary scientific capability among AICIS staff.
• Provide high level scientific and technical policy support to the Executive Director of the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme
• Oversight the AICIS Regulatory Science Strategy
• Guide and develop specialist staff that conduct risk assessments for industrial chemicals and make risk management recommendations to relevant entities
• Promote the risk proportionate legislative framework through fit for purpose assessment methods and processes
• Contribute to the AICIS Executive, AICIS operations and planning
• Contribute to the development of strategic regulatory and scientific advice regarding the regulation of industrial chemicals
• Quality assurance of assessment and evaluation statements, and facilitate the development of discussion papers, committee agenda papers and briefs, guidelines and other documents relevant to the work of AICIS
• Represent AICIS in domestic and international discussions as required, including with government and non-government agencies, industry, community organisations and scientific fora
• Demonstrate leadership that contributes to team and individual scientific performance, productivity and accountability
To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate the following experience, skills and attributes:
• Demonstrated experience in and understanding of the regulation of chemicals/substances in the Australian context, ideally industrial chemicals
• Well-developed scientific knowledge and risk analysis skills in a regulatory context and ability to guide specialist staff to achieve outcomes within a prescribed timeframe
• Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, particularly to establish productive networks and to promote technical innovation
• Excellent organisational and time management skills, including the ability to support delivery of a range of competing tasks and priorities within a busy team environment under limited direction
• A strategic focus, strong understanding of regulatory science and decision-making
Mandatory Qualification:
To be eligible for this position applicants must hold a Postgraduate in any of the following disciplines: risk assessment and/or management, toxicology, biology, chemistry, or medical science.
