About the organisation
Ad Standards is Australia's national advertising regulator. For 25 years, it has promoted responsible advertising, giving a voice to community concerns about the content of advertisements by independently handling complaints under the advertising industry codes. With advertising content in Australia being self-regulated, Ad Standards was established to administer an independent, platform-neutral and flexible solution to upholding the rules drafted by Australian Association of National Advertisers (AANA), and support Ad Standards' independent Community Panel, which adjudicates and makes decisions about complaints. Ad Standards is at a pivotal point in its quarter-of-a-century history, taking a proactive approach to monitoring advertising, and responding to technological and societal changes.

About the role
Reporting to, and working collaboratively with, the Ad Standards Governance Chair and the AANA Board, the Executive Director is responsible for developing and implementing Ad Standards' strategic direction, ensuring the organisation remains responsive to changes in the advertising industry and regulatory environment. In overseeing Ad Standards' day-to-day operations, the position will enhance the efficient and effective processes and the management of resources, including protecting its ongoing sustainability through sound financial stewardship, budgeting and reporting. Critical to Ad Standard's integrity as a self-regulator, will be steering the Community Panel recruitment, decision making and effectiveness, and maintaining robust governance frameworks and operational policies. As the primary spokesperson, the appointee will nurture strong relationships with a range of key stakeholders – from advertisers and media agencies to regulatory bodies – and represent the organisation in industry forums, government consultations and media engagements. Among the opportunities will be taking ownership of the evolution to more proactive monitoring, developing an approach to the successful and effective maintenance of advertising standards in non-traditional media, and building the awareness of the critical role of the organisation with the public. In leading a small team, the Executive Director will foster engagement and build a team culture of collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement.

About you
You are an accomplished, authentic and polished executive leader with a nuanced appreciation of regulatory process, policy-making and compliance. A background in legal policy, or a familiarity with the advertising and media industry and key players, would be highly regarded, but not mandatory. Adept at crafting medium to long-term strategic plans, you find solutions to complex and future-defining challenges. A compelling yet approachable communicator with well-honed interpersonal skills, you are comfortable in public speaking and engaging with the media, and effective in cultivating relationships with a range of stakeholders. A hands-on leader, you motivate and nurture team members, value innovation and champion continuous improvement. You relish the opportunity to play a future-shaping role in an organisation that serves to ensure consumer trust and protection.
