Our team The National Location Information Branch is responsible for the delivery of a range of national foundation geospatial data, products and services, as well as the design and delivery of the Digital Atlas of Australia. We are a team of approximately 80 Australian Public Service and contracted staff dedicated to delivering integrated and trusted FAIR data and services to the nation. We are looking for a skilled and highly motivated individual to join and be an integral component of our focused team, to be responsible for optimising our current data program and also growing the capability substantially. The role The Director, National Geospatial Data, will lead, manage and mentor a team of approximately 20 people which will include mostly Australian Public Service employees with some contractor augmentation. You will be responsible for the efficient and effective design and delivery of the National Geospatial Data program with a focus on priority high value datasets to be seamlessly integrated and shared through the Digital Atlas of Australia and other mechanisms.
You will work closely with other Directors in the National Location Information Branch, and key stakeholders from the Place and Communities Division, wider Geoscience Australia, across multiple levels of government and industry to ensure the provision of single source national foundation geospatial data, and programmatically deliver outcomes wherever possible. A key area of optimisation is the provision of foundation geospatial data and product to both the Australian Department of Defence and the Emergency Management communities.
You will report to the National Location Information Branch Head and work closely with the other Directorates within the Branch to deliver organisational outcomes.
You will be required to routinely apply complex analytical skills, be able to effectively prioritise, have excellent time management, make informed risk-based decisions, communicate compelling arguments in plain English (verbally and in writing) and manage budgets. Whilst it's a challenging role, the national, organisational, professional and personal gains are great.
In this role you will: Lead, manage and mentor the National Geospatial Data Directorate.Design and deliver the Geoscience Australia National Geospatial Data program.Work closely with key stakeholders to deliver priority high value, trusted national data in a range of ways, including integrating and sharing data into the Digital Atlas of Australia.Optimise the Defence Mapping Agreement to ensure priority outcomes are delivered on time, within budget, and ideally achieve programmatic efficiencies.Use your geospatial knowledge, skills and experience to successfully direct your cross-functional team, identify opportunities, understand second and third order effects, and optimally engage with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.Apply your refined complex analytic skills to ensure strategic direction is delivered through demonstrable and measurable outcomes.Communicate succinctly and compellingly in plain English in written and verbal forms, including acting as spokesperson and delivering presentations to a range of stakeholders.Work collaboratively within the National Location Information Branch; the Place and Communities Division; Geoscience Australia; and with our stakeholders across all levels of government, industry, academia and the community.Be proficient in making informed risk-based decisions and enable others to do the same.Develop and manage budgets and work plans, including effective and efficient employment of, and deliverables from, contractors and service providers.Anticipate and establish priorities, monitor progress and work to deliver required National Geospatial Data outcomes.Ensure customer service standards are met, and address customer feedback from a variety of sources.Identify, negotiate and enable innovative solutions to meet Project, Program and organisational outcomes.Provide leadership in implementing and promoting a culture of change and continuous improvement.Represent and negotiate on behalf of Geoscience Australia to advance the organisation's interests in cross-agency, inter-jurisdictional, international and other forums.To be successful in the role you will: Provide strategic and technical leadership to ensure the successful design and delivery of a Geoscience Australia national foundation geospatial data program.Improve mutually beneficial outcomes for a nested geospatial data partnership with the Department of Defence.Develop and sustain a high functioning, motivated and focused cross-functional team of APS staff and contractors who love what they do and are enabled to do it well.Seek out and lead opportunities to improve currency, coverage and quality of national spatial data.Work in close partnership with the Digital Atlas of Australia team to seamlessly integrate and share geospatial data through the Digital Atlas of Australia.Maintain an awareness of best practice geospatial data creation, curation, lifecycle management, Integrated Geospatial Infrastructure, Digital Twins and associated ICT.Become a highly valued member of the National Location Information Branch and Geoscience Australia.Adhere to the APS values and code of conduct and consistently behave in an honest, ethical and professional way.Advantageous skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications Spatial proficiency with demonstrable experience in the delivery of complex geospatial data projects and/or programs.Demonstrable experience in project management of at least medium (>$20M) sized project/s.Demonstratable skills in stakeholder engagement, particularly across government and industry.Experience in leading diverse teams.Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. This includes the ability to translate the technical into a compelling argument for the not technical; and an ability to translate strategic intent into geospatial work packages.You must possess and utilise a positive, delivery focused mindset.Whilst we are focused on leveraging your spatial knowledge, skills and experience, a detailed geospatial background, particularly utilising Esri products and services, and/or tertiary qualifications in spatial sciences are highly desirable.A note on security: Whilst the minimum security classification for this position is baseline, higher classifications are both desirable and maintainable.Are you unsure about applying?
