The Law Society of New South Wales is looking to employ a Director, Policy and Practice, to lead its Policy and Practice Department on a full-time permanent basis. This role forms part of our Senior Management Group.
About the role The Director, Policy and Practice will lead the Law Society's advocacy work, through managing the Policy and Practice Department, and ensuring the provision of high level legal policy advice to the Chief Executive Officer, President and Council. You will also manage the operations of the Access to Justice Department.
About the teams The Policy and Practice Department researches and advises on issues relating to legal practice, policy and law reform. The Department supports 18 policy committees, and has responsibility for major legal policy projects.
The Access to Justice Department supports the Law Society in its mission to provide referral, information, and legal assistance services to the community and solicitors in NSW by operating:
The Solicitor Referral Service.The Locum Service.The Legal Information Service.The Dispute Resolution Service.The Law Society Mediation Accreditation Scheme.The Access to Justice Department also coordinates the Law Society's advocacy in relation to access to justice issues, in consultation with other Law Society Committees and liaising with external stakeholders, and considers and promotes alternative approaches to enhance access to justice for the public.
What you'll be doing Provide advice to the Chief Executive Officer on legal policy issues and initiatives, ensuring the provision of prompt, accurate and appropriate policy advice.Provide policy support to the Chief Executive Officer, President and Council.Lead key policy projects and campaigns.Manage the performance and development of direct reports via the Law Society's Performance Review process.Manage and oversee the activities of the Policy and Practice and Access to Justice Departments.Participate in the Senior Management Group and contribute to the development and implementation of the Law Society's Strategic Plan.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.About you Must be eligible to hold a NSW practising certificate.Extensive experience in legal policy at a senior level.Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write reports, recommendations, briefing papers, and speeches in a clear and concise manner.Ability to "think outside the square" – including developing new and different ways of looking at current issues as well as taking a long-term perspective when making strategic decisions.Excellent analytical skills.Proven management and leadership abilities.Knowledge and application of budgeting processes, including monitoring costs and revenues against budget.Experience in effective management of resources to meet objectives and competing deadlines.Demonstrated ability to adopt a strategic approach to problem solving.High level interpersonal and influencing skills.Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.Work collaboratively as a team member as well as in a leadership role.Work effectively under pressure.Focused and outcome driven.To Apply The Law Society of New South Wales is committed to building and maintaining a respectful and inclusive workplace, appointing the best person for the role and supporting diversity.
