Casual Associate Position The District Court is seeking expressions of interest to fill the role of Casual Associate in 2024 and 2025 being required to sit in the Civil and the Criminal jurisdiction of the District Court at Sydney, Parramatta, Penrith and Campbelltown. Casual associates will be required at times to undertake country circuits.
Description of Role The Associate's role is to provide broad and high-level legal and administrative support both in Court and in Chambers. The Associate is responsible for managing her/his Honour's Chambers and is the first point of contact for all members of the public and the profession. The role encompasses assisting her/his Honour with complex legal research, drafting, in-court duties, jury empanelment, accurate record keeping and general day-to-day administrative tasks.
Required Skills and Abilities Candidates who apply for the position should be able to demonstrate the following skills and requirements:
Degree qualification or be currently enrolled completing studies;
an interest in criminal law, evidence law and advocacy;the ability to maintain absolute confidentiality and discretion;excellent attention to detail;good interpersonal skills;outstanding organisational skills and an ability to cope under pressure;superior written and oral communication skills; andbasic mathematical and technological skills.There is no guarantee of continued employment with successful applicants working on a casual ad hoc basis only.

The role as a Casual Associate will include exposure to information about disturbing events such as, but not limited to: Domestic ViolenceChild Sexual AssaultUnexplained, unexpected, or sudden deathsSelf-harmChildren's Care ProceedingsSexual or gender based violenceAssaults leading to serious injury or deathThis exposure, particularly while working in a court room environment, will include hearing distressing information from victims or witnesses and exposure to distressing photography, video, or audio recordings from actual events, including high profile cases.
Staff may also be working in roles that have direct interaction or contact with a client who may be angry, distressed, abusive and sometimes threatening.
Staff working within these roles will deal with a wide range of court users (the legal profession, Police, Judicial Officers, members of the public and other government and non-government stakeholders). It is important our staff demonstrate resilience, possess strong client service and communication skills and display empathy, tact and can maintain confidentiality.
Ongoing support, guidance and training is provided to all staff within Court Services.
Salary The casual rate of pay is $415.27 daily with 15% causal loading of $57.50 total $472.77 daily.
