This Australian Government statutory authority is dedicated to preserving and promoting the unique customs and cultural heritage of Indigenous communities in its region. Operating under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) Act 2005, the organisation is responsible for developing and implementing programs aimed at supporting local Indigenous communities.
Key functions include monitoring the effectiveness of these programs, crafting policies to address regional and national priorities, and working closely with community organisations and government agencies. The organisation also advises the Minister for Indigenous Australians on relevant matters and ensures coordination across various government bodies to enhance regional development and well-being.
The Opportunity
As the Business Support Team Manager, you will be responsible for leading a dynamic team in supporting the operational and financial management of key projects for the Land and Sea Management Unit (LSMU). Based on Thursday Island, this role will ensure the smooth implementation of program activities while maintaining compliance with internal processes and government policies.
Some of your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Oversee strategic planning with leadership to align program activities with the Torres Strait Development Plan.Manage key funding agreement requirements, including budgeting, reporting, and relationship management.Provide logistical and financial management support to project teams, ensuring smooth operations.Implement procurements, manage contracts, and support recruitments, training, and Ranger activities.Lead a team of up to 5 staff, fostering professional growth and delivering on program outcomes.Develop business solutions for executive consideration, including drafting reports and communications.Build strong relationships with stakeholders, identifying opportunities for collaboration and community engagement.Your Skills & Experience Understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, with the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively.Experience in business support areas, such as procurement, contract management, risk management, and project management.Proven leadership skills, with experience in managing and supporting a diverse team.Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage persuasively with a range of audiences.Highly motivated, with the ability to work independently in a complex environment and manage competing priorities.Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with a track record of innovative problem-solving.Experience in financial management, particularly in a government context, with proficiency in Word and Excel.The Offer 27 days annual leave.Generous remote area allowances and relocation assistance.Travel and accommodation support for medical/dental treatment on the mainland for employees and eligible family members.A supportive, culturally connected work environment, with opportunities for professional growth and development.To ensure compliance with Australian employment law, this role is only open to candidates who possess either the right to work in Australia, permanent residency, citizenship status or visa status.
