Ballarat Wildlife Park | Animal Team Leader

The successful applicant will participate in daily husbandry of both Native and Exotic species and will assist the park's Curator in their role. We are seeking an extremely clean, tidy, and organised individual. The applicant will need to maintain high standards in our exhibit presentation as well as the off-exhibit areas, keep accurate animal records, work accurately to an SOP, assist with the supervision of volunteers, and interact with guests among other duties.
This is a full-time 38-hour position (5 days per week) and will involve work on weekends and public holidays. As Senior Keeper and Assistant Curator of the Ballarat Wildlife Park, you will play a key role in working across multiple animal areas and supporting the Curator in managing the park's animal collection, exhibits, and conservation programs. You will assist in ensuring the welfare of the animals, support the supervision and training of keepers and other staff members to maintain a high standard of animal care, and assist in ensuring compliance with legal regulations and industry standards related to the park's operations.
Prerequisites: Minimum 3 years experience with the care of carnivores, reptiles and amphibians, mammals, and birds in a wildlife park/zoo setting. Knowledge of the captive husbandry and biology of reptiles and amphibians, carnivores, mammals, and birds. Understanding of heating, filtration systems, and water quality. Effective written and verbal communication skills and a familiarity with zoological software and database management. Willingness to work a variable roster that includes weekends and public holidays. Excellent personal presentation and a good level of fitness. A strong, safety-conscious focus. An ability to ensure that best practice animal husbandry is applied at all times. Commitment and depth knowledge in conservation. Demonstrated ability to work productively, both individually and in a small team setting. Excellent time management and observational skills. Effective public speaking skills, and a willingness to conduct public presentations and tours for entertainment and the promotion of sympathetic views to interpret animal behaviour and conservation. Commitment to animal welfare, conservation, and environmental sustainability. Current driver's licence and own reliable transport. Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Biology, Conservation, or related field. Certificate III in Captive Animal Management or other relevant qualification/experience. Experience with Australasian Zoo Industry accreditation. Previous experience with the captive maintenance of venomous snakes with an excellent safety record. Previous experience with the captive maintenance of crocodilians. Experience with Big Cats highly desirable. Current Basic First Aid.
