Is this role right for you? You'll be naturally curious and love working with numbers and analysing data. You will need to have strong attention to detail and be comfortable working with specialised tools to do calculations and keep records. You enjoy solving problems and are committed to lifelong learning so you can stay up to date with new information and trends.
What are some example projects or experiences? Accountants play a vital role in all types of rail organisations. You could secure a position managing all the accounts and finances for a small engineering firm. Or you could be part of a large accounting team within a government department that manages rail infrastructure and planning. If you specialise in financial auditing, you might work for a consulting firm that reviews financial statements to help rail organisations maintain compliance.
What is the work environment like? You'll work in an office, usually with a team of finance professionals such as payroll officers and accounts managers. Your day could include preparing balance sheets or financial statements, reviewing cash flow reports, or general record keeping. You may participate in meetings, and act as an advisor to other business areas on finance matters. Your work could also involve auditing, and may require you to visit a certain location or project site to review documents and records. You can find work as an accountant all around Australia. Most jobs are in cities and towns. Some are in remote areas.
Qualifications You can complete a Diploma of Accounting, but most roles require a degree in accounting or commerce. Many accountants also complete a Chartered Accountant (CA) or Certified Public Accountants (CPA) qualification. Our industry values diverse personal and work experience.
