The Wildlife Officer role advertised is part of the Northern Operations team. The team operates in Mackay, Queensland to deliver services to conserve and protect native and threatened wildlife and associated habitat—with particular focus on:
• regulation of the Nature Conservation Act to deliver protected wildlife compliance and enforcement
• providing safe interaction between people and wildlife
• working with the community to build positive interactions between community and wildlife
• applied research to assist in the development of innovative wildlife management strategies
The Branch plays a vital role in delivering effective conservation and regulatory outcomes for Queensland's native species and ecosystems and their safe interaction with the community generally.
Wildlife Officers in the Northern Region Operations have a focus on wildlife management. This includes working with crocodiles, cassowaries and flying-foxes. This may require safely responding to isolated and remote situations in North Queensland for extended periods of time. Tasks are likely to include operating communication and navigational systems, employing survival techniques, undertaking equipment repair, and the use of environmental indicators to make decisions. You may be required to undertake short term stays in remote locations with little or no facilities available.
As the Wildlife Officer you will:
Plan and undertake preventative and targeted compliance activities relevant to the Nature Conservation Act 1992 including conducting field inspections, undertaking audits, the preparation of reports, issuing of infringement notices and assisting with prosecutions as required. Advise, liaise, consult and negotiate with all levels of Government agencies, industry and community groups on wildlife management issues and implementation of policy. Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people. Undertake practical tasks related to wildlife management such as safe capture and restraint of protected wildlife including crocodiles, attending marine wildlife stranding's, installation of informative signage and maintenance of equipment as required by the Wildlife and Threatened Species Operations Branch. The WOO5 in the Mackay team will assist the Senior Wildlife Officer for daily, weekly and emergent operational responses. You will be part of a small team for majority of the daily operations but expected to contribute and participate in boarder team responses and duties. You will undertake operational maintenance for equipment, vessels, trailers, oversee wildlife husbandry and compliance for the team. This role includes working with crocodiles, cassowaries and flying foxes. Experience in contemporary wildlife management and conservation is highly desirable for this role.
