About the role: In this Vice President role, you will be the lead lawyer in Oceania for Litigation Management, Legal Risk Management, Employment Law matters, Regulatory Compliance / Financial Crime Prevention legal matters, vendor contracts and inter-affiliate legal documentation.
What you'll be doing: Strategic establishment of the legal risk management framework; provision of trusted, relevant advice to human resources, compliance and financial crime prevention functions in Oceania in order to assist their performance. Control of legal risk, specifically litigation management risk by providing timely guidance to the business units in handling dispute and certain pre-dispute actions (legal hold, dawn raid, investigation support). Provision of legal advice on the negotiation of vendor contracts to reflect services to be acquired by MUFG. Be an independent guardian and trusted business partner by providing commercially sensitive, pragmatic and practical legal support and advice in a cost effective and timely manner to MUFG. Be proactive in the provision of legal consultancy services and guidance to business units on material legal developments with regards to a broad range of products, services and issues. Ensure that MUFG Oceania's senior management is fully briefed on major issues arising in relevant business area and major legislative changes. Collaborate closely with Legal Office for Asia, Head Office Legal in Tokyo, international legal functions in other regions and other local legal units within the branches and subsidiaries of MUFG. Support group-wide projects, litigation matters, plan and support MUFG local legal offices across APAC' management of legal issues and liaise and coordinate with external legal counsels. Support Head of Legal, Asia Pacific by engaging in global, regional and/or country initiatives, supervise and manage legal affairs in Asia, optimise internal and external legal resources. View legal transactions and risks with a regional perspective, driving standardisation across APAC and identifying issues in local laws and regulations which justifies deviation from a regional benchmark. What we are looking for: Minimum 6-8 years of post-qualification work experience (counting from equivalent Australian qualification dates i.e. translate to a 4-6 year PQE in UK terms). Lawyer qualified in a common law jurisdiction, ideally Aus/NZ qualified but candidates qualified in Singapore, US, UK, Hong Kong, Malaysia & India will also be considered. Prior experience in regulatory compliance/HR/litigation/legal risk management. Prior in-house legal experience in a financial institution would be an advantage. Broad experience across banking and lending, wholesale/investment banking products and capital markets. Strong technical knowledge of legal framework surrounding finance transactions generally, and strong document drafting skills. Good knowledge of regulatory requirements relating to finance and banking. Self-motivated and independent, with the ability to clearly challenge process and decisions, as well as to set new standards to ensure best practices are always followed. Highly motivated and a willingness to get involved. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to manage large workloads and tight deadlines. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
