What you'll do The Safety Engineer SGS-E is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the system safety aspects of the system including compliance of the system safety program with the Land Materiel Safety Manual (LMSM) and Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations. The Safety Engineer plays a pivotal role in:
Establishing and maintaining the In-service Materiel Safety Plan (IMSP) and all associated documents and processes. Ensuring system safety aspects of the system are maintained and mitigated SFARP in accordance with the approved IMSP. Ensuring all system safety program activities are conducted in accordance with the approved IMSP, LMSM, Defence Safety Manual (SafetyMan), CASG WHS Policy (CASsafe) and WHS Act 2011. Providing SME advice on all matters relating to system safety. Working collaboratively with the internal team and external partners on matters relating to system safety. The day-to-day Some key responsibilities of the Safety Engineer are:
Conduct hazard and risk assessments using standard process methodologies to support program activities (eg engineering change, faults, defects, deviations, parts substitution, changes in program resources and procedures) and ensure all hazards/risk are mitigated SFARP in accordance with approved processes. Develop and maintain the safety documentation suite inclusive of IMSP, Safety Case Report, Hazard Log and System Safety Program to accurately reflect the system safety case and associated hazards and controls. Review engineering change proposals (ECP) and request for variances (RFV) for impacts to system safety and develop, in conjunction with other SMEs, appropriate controls to mitigate risks SFARP. Maintain safety-related system standard operating procedures (SOP) and registers. Work closely with the HSEQ manager and Government client to ensure alignment of the system safety program with LMSM requirements, regulatory requirements (eg WHS) and Viasat safety policies. Establish and lead System Safety Working Groups (SSWG) in accordance with the approved System Safety Program. Ensure all safety incidents are handled in accordance with approved processes and procedures. Provide SME advice on safety related matters to both the internal team and external partners. Lead consultation, co-ordination and co-operation with customers on all matters relating to system safety. Maintain all safety data in the approved engineering information and data management system. Carry out other engineering duties as directed by the Chief Engineer and Program Manager. What you'll need Tertiary qualifications in Engineering. Confirmed experience as a System Safety Engineer in Defence (or similar) industry. Have a deep understanding of Defence safety frameworks and requirements including LMSM, SafetyMan, CASsafe, WHS Act 2011 and standard methodologies. Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate safety concepts and ideas to a broad range of audiences. Be skilled at critically analysing complex problems, figuring out root causes and proposing practical solutions. Have the ability to negotiate with and influence partners to ensure system safety is maintained. Have a continuous improvement attitude and the ability to proactively identify areas for improvement, implement process enhancements. Must be an Australian citizen and have an active Australian Government Security Clearance (NV1) or have held one previously. What will help you on the job The Safety Engineer should have:
Five or more years of experience as a System Safety Engineer, preferably within Defence (or similar) industry. Should have a broad technical understanding of communications systems processes, systems, infrastructure and technologies. Previous experience working with a satellite communications or communications system in a sustainment capacity. Experience in development of Defence Sustainment Contract documentation. Ability to achieve Professional Chartered Status with Engineers Australia (or equivalent).
