Purpose of the Role As a Technical Motor Underwriter, you'll be responsible for developing and implementing innovative Domestic Motor Underwriting Guidelines, both Core and Discretionary.
Your role includes reviewing and enhancing existing guidelines to improve business outcomes and customer experience, as well as leading continuous improvement initiatives for underwriting systems and processes. You will provide expert support to Production Underwriters and stakeholders, participate in User Acceptance Testing for system changes, and contribute to market and competitor analysis.
Key Responsibilities Recommend and develop improvements to existing and new Underwriting Guidelines. Create and document processes to boost Motor Underwriting efficiency. Assess how business changes affect risk acceptability and the Underwriting framework. Identify and implement enhancements and automation for Underwriting Guidelines and systems. Contribute to the development and refinement of Underwriting Guidelines. Investigate and address Underwriting compliance issues, collaborating on corrective actions. Oversee and report on Underwriting projects and new Guidelines, including post-implementation reviews. Regularly review Underwriting decisions for adherence to Guidelines and processes. Provide management with reports on decision trends and improvement opportunities. Deliver monthly reports on Motor portfolio performance, including referral volumes and inspections. Perform user acceptance testing for system changes. Advise and support Contact Centre, Claims, and Internal Dispute Resolution. Act as a Subject Matter Expert in cross-divisional projects. Key Requirements and Experience: Essential At least 5+ years' General Insurance (preferably Domestic/ Retail lines) experience in Underwriting, Product Development, Portfolio Management, Claims and/or IDR/ Quality Assurance. Sound judgment skills with the ability to interpret, evaluate and disseminate information. Excellent problem-solving ability combined with attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Sound knowledge/ understanding of short-tail insurance product(s), underwriting and rating methods, systems, and procedures – including drivers and levers of profitable growth. In-depth knowledge of relevant regulatory regimes, compliance and insurance legislation. Sound numerical and analytical skills. Ability to work autonomously while maintaining focus. Experience in managing and completing user acceptance testing. IT literacy and the ability to learn new systems. Working knowledge of common application software, e.g. MS Office suite. Ability to respond rapidly and positively to change and to work under pressure to deliver outcomes with competing priorities. Desirable Tertiary qualification preferred. Experience with SQL/ SAS.
