About QuestaconQuestacon – The National Science and Technology Centre is a division of the Australian Government Department of Industry Science and Resources. We work with partners and supporters to deliver inspirational learning experiences for young Australians, their teachers, families and communities.
About the teamThe National Touring Programs team delivers a range of hands-on and interactive activities to increase student and community engagement with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Activities are delivered in-person or via video conference to audiences in Canberra and throughout regional and remote parts of Australia.
Activities include:
Questacon Science Circus primary-school science shows – captivating performances for students showcasing some of the wondrous science in the world around them.Innovation workshops for high-school students – STEM challenges designed to develop student inquiry and problem solving skills, communication and confidence.Pop-up science centres – supporting regional communities to have a taste of Questacon, with hands-on exhibits and spectacular science shows to engage the whole family.The opportunityAre you passionate about science, or eager to make a difference in under-served schools and communities? Our ideal candidateAt the APS 6 level, our ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:
Strong leadership skills, emotional intelligence and the ability to motivate and support a large and diverse team to achieve results through good direction, mentoring and coaching.Experience managing the coordination and planning of complex projects, demonstrating excellent organisational and time management skills and the ability to support several project teams concurrently.Demonstrated ability to take responsibility for decisions, using initiative and working independently under minimal supervision, including under time pressure and during periods of travel.Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and contribute to positive team culture.Desirable: experience coordinating, leading, and/or delivering STEM engagement activities.
At the APS 5 level, our ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:
Strong organisational and time management skills, with an ability to manage projects, use initiative and identify and mitigate risks.Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and with stakeholders, including an ability to support and mentor team members.Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities and maintain productive relationships.Desirable: qualifications or relevant experience in science communication, education and/or a STEM field.Desirable: demonstrated experience in the development and delivery of STEM programs and resources for a range of audiences.What you will doWorking consistently within the expectations for an APS Level 6 in the APS Work Level Standards, Team Leaders will:
Guide and support Project Coordinators and the broader team in the successful planning and delivery of complex national touring programs and activities.Supervise and lead the program delivery team, and identify development and training requirements to ensure a high level of team capability.Effectively allocate and monitor resources, including staff, equipment and budget.Proactively identify problems, risks, and improvements, with a solutions-focused approach to unexpected change.Establish and maintain effective communication channels and tools across the team, including with managers.Maintain and improve processes for safety and quality assurance.Collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to achieve team aims.Travel to and work in remote, regional and metropolitan locations across Australia.Working consistently with the expectations for an APS Level 5 in the APS Work Level Standards, Project Coordinators will:
Coordinate and plan projects, oversee travel arrangements and other logistics to ensure programs are delivered successfullyDeliver high quality programs for a range of audiences using a variety of formats which may include:activity-based workshopsscience demonstrations and performanceslive video conference presentations or workshopsProvide project-based mentoring, coaching and training to team membersProvide support and regular communications to team leaders and managersCollaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to achieve project aims.Contribute to the ongoing improvement of programs and the development and evaluation of new activitiesContribute to written communications including reports, social media and promotional material for eventsTravel to and work in remote, regional and metropolitan locations across Australia.EligibilityCandidates must:
currently hold a full or P2 drivers licence (and have held a full or provisional licence for 12 months before commencing the position)hold or be able to obtain a current registration issued under the Working With Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 and maintain this registration for the duration of employmenthave the ability to obtain registration to work with children and vulnerable people in other Australian states and territories as required by local authoritiespass a national police checkbe able to obtain a basic First Aid CertificateTo be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
NotesWhile these positions are based in Canberra, their key focus is tours to regional and remote Australia lasting 2-4 weeks each, with each person typically completing 2-3 tours over a year.

On tour, the team delivers some programs on weekends and public holidays to engage the whole community, and in these instances overtime rates apply.

Accommodation and travel expenses are provided by the department for all touring periods. 
A merit pool may be established and used to fill future vacancies within 18 months from the date the vacancy was first advertised in the Gazette.
