The Professional Support Unit of the Law Society of NSW provides guidance and education to NSW legal practitioners on their ethical and regulatory obligations under the Uniform Law. We're looking for a Team Leader to join the team on a full-time basis.
About the role The Team Leader, Professional Support, will oversee and continuously improve the delivery of the Professional Support Unit's services to solicitors, in relation to ethics, costs and regulatory compliance. In this role, you will directly provide guidance to the profession on their ethical and regulatory obligations under the Uniform Law, as well as emerging regulatory issues affecting solicitors, such as anti-money laundering. You will also assist the Head of Regulatory Policy and Strategy in the development of a strategic approach to educating NSW solicitors on regulatory and policy issues.
What you'll be doing Manage the Society's Professional Support Unit, which will include:
Ensuring timely answering and resolution of calls to the PSU hotlines and emails.Managing the staff of the Unit including ongoing performance appraisals.Assisting the development of continuing education products and services, informed by data and evidence obtained from complaints processes and other sources.Developing education and other communications strategies to respond to emerging regulatory trends and issues, drawing both from the complaints process and more broadly.Overseeing the support provided to the Costs and Ethics Committees by the Unit.Ensuring the efficient use of resources.You will also:
Assist practitioners with regulatory, ethical and costs issues, including answering email and telephone enquiries.Manage, prepare and edit materials for the Ethics and Standards Quarterly, the Law Society Journal, Monday Briefs and other resources available to the legal profession.Create educational resources and present continuing education seminars for the profession on issues in relation to regulatory compliance, ethics and costs, and on issues and matters related to general legal practice management.Review standards and requirements established for legal practices to promote compliance with the Uniform Law and other relevant legislation.Manage the content of the Law Society's web-based information services relating to regulatory compliance, ethics and costs.Manage secretariat support for the various committees managed by the PSU, including the Costs and Ethics Committees of the Law Society.Undertake research (or direct that research be undertaken) on a range of matters relevant to regulatory compliance, ethics and costs to assist in the development of practical and educational resources for legal practitioners.Develop seminars and information resources to respond to emerging trends in relation to regulatory issues, including supports for new principals of legal practices.Liaise with other teams within the Law Society to ensure guidance provided to practitioners is consistent across the Law Society.Liaise with other external stakeholders, including Lawcover and other regulators, particularly the Designated Local Regulatory Authorities, on wider policy issues to promote consistency, particularly among the Uniform jurisdictions.Assist the Head of Regulatory Policy and Strategy with ad hoc project work and initiatives as required.Provide the Head of Regulatory Policy and Strategy and Director of Legal Regulation with legal advice as required, in the areas of regulatory compliance, costs and ethics.About you Tertiary qualifications in law and current practising certificate.Practice experience and a sound knowledge in regulatory compliance and anti-money laundering legislation or policy principles.Demonstrates a high level of professional and technical knowledge of the legislative procedures and the legal profession and regularly keeps abreast of recent developments in this area.Working knowledge of all relevant legislation.Desirable: Familiarity with regulatory frameworks; Sound understanding of legal practice management (including costs or ethics) and compliance auditing and/or of Quality and 'Best Practice' management principles (based upon training or experience) or relevant practice experience.Demonstrated ability to provide effective, clear and concise communication.Ability to create a suite of educational resources, including articles, checklists, alerts, presentations and workshopsHighly developed interpersonal, presentation and influencing skills.The ability to work as part of a small team of solicitors.Strong prioritising and organisational skills.Computer skills including word-processing, email and internet applications.Displays a commitment to quality client service, values the supplying of accurate and timely information and relates to people from diverse backgrounds.Common sense and adherence to confidentiality.Ability to work as part of a team.Regulates own behavior and that of a team, comprehends organisational structure and culture and acts appropriately in the execution of duties.Behaves in an honest and trustworthy manner, treats others fairly and is open about one's own misjudgements and any conflicts of interest which may be present.To apply The Law Society of New South Wales is committed to building and maintaining a respectful and inclusive workplace, appointing the best person for the role and supporting diversity.
