About the role This role is designated for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person under Section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991. The Support Practitioner - Identified provides high-quality support to children, young people, foster and kinship carers, and families, primarily within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This role promotes culturally safe practices while contributing to initiatives aligned with the mission and values of Churches of Christ.
As a First Nations Support Practitioner, you will: Provide culturally safe, inclusive support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people, and families. Partner with foster and kinship carers to ensure safety, stability, and wellbeing. Conduct assessments, deliver short-term interventions, and prepare suitability reports for carers and children. Facilitate evidence-based parenting programs and model strategies to address family needs. Build strong networks by collaborating with community agencies and referral partners. Manage screening, intake, and placement processes for children and young people. Design, implement, and evaluate care programs tailored to individual needs. Deliver flexible in-home support, including after-hours and on-call assistance, with intervention planning and referrals as needed. Work sensitively with First Nations families and communities to address challenges and break cycles of over-representation in care.
About you You are passionate about First Nations culture, and your skills reflect your commitment to improving the lives of children and families. You bring resilience, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage complex situations with care and sensitivity.
To be suitable for this position, ideally you will have: A degree qualification in social work, psychology, social sciences, or a related discipline—or equivalent expertise (minimum Certificate III in Community Services) with more than four years of experience as approved by the State or Operations Manager. Applied knowledge and understanding of child protection and out-of-home care frameworks, including the Child Protection Act 1999 or the ability to acquire this knowledge. A demonstrated ability to complete assessments for care. Knowledge of the contemporary challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Experience working with First Nations communities, with cultural competence and sensitivity.
Additional requirements include: A current driver's license (P2 minimum). The ability to obtain a Blue Card, National Police Certificate, and Child Safety Screening.
