About the Role
A pivotal role within a headspace Hervey Bay and Maryborough, our Intake Officers effectively engage, screen, assess, refer, and coordinate care for young people aged 12-25 who contact or are referred to the headspace Centre. As the first contact point for young people calling or attending the Centre, the Intake Officer is required to build a positive rapport with a wide range of young people, as well as their networks and stakeholders.
The role is responsible for conducting initial triage screening of young people experiencing mental health challenges using psychosocial assessments as necessary to determine appropriate referral pathways and for completing administrative tasks within the intake process including, but not limited to creating profiles for new young people and maintaining documentation to support streamlined servicing.
The role is also responsible for the provision of appropriate and timely referrals both internal and external; delivery of psychosocial group work; reducing barriers to obtaining services; establishing linkages; and other activities recorded in progress notes. The Intake Officer participates in regular clinical supervision and is required to present and discuss cases with the clinical care team.
This is a Part Time contract until June 2026 with possibility of extension!
Key Role Accountabilities:
Ensure young people and their families are active participants in the development and review of treatment goals and planning, and that positive, professional relationships and rapport are developed and maintained with young people and their support networks. Relate to young people in a manner which is relevant and appropriate to their developmental and cognitive level of functioning, provide services in a youth-friendly manner, and promote and adhere to youth-friendly practice principles. Manage incoming referrals to the Centre and use appropriate phone triage and intake skills to assess referrals and complete associated onboarding tasks for new young people including profile set up, managing onboarding documents and completing timely intakes. Utilise discipline-specific skills, professional mental health knowledge and clinical decision-making abilities to accurately conduct client focused psychosocial assessments, including comprehensive risk assessment, developing action plans to mitigate any risks, and providing follow up support and referral for treatment. Complete case management tasks as required, including appropriate and timely liaison and referrals with internal and external staff, private practitioners, services, and agencies to support young people's needs. Adopt and utilise a dynamic, mobile approach to service delivery, including provision of outreach support on occasion, to meet organisational and community needs, if required and as directed. Provide a professional standard of care, including maintaining professional registration if relevant, and ensure all services are provided within the boundaries of your profession's relevant Code of Ethics, adhere to duty of care requirements, and all relevant legislation. Support and guide students completing their placements within the Access & Engagement team. About You
Demonstrated experience working in mental health and/or in-depth understanding of the mental health issues affecting young people, and including best treatment options, support services and co-morbidities. Knowledge and understanding of the theory underpinning evidence-based interventions and clinical practice as well as demonstrated excellence in their practical application. Ability to work in a culturally safe, holistic, youth-friendly way with young people from diverse backgrounds, including but not limited to those from Indigenous, refugee, CALD, LGBTQIAP+ and low socio-economic backgrounds. Commitment to ongoing development of capacity to ensure cultural safety. Demonstrated ability to identify, develop and maintain long term linkages and networks with a range of government, community, and corporate stakeholders to facilitate clear referral pathways for clients. Highly effective and professional verbal and written communication, interpersonal skills, and computing skills, including proficiency across the Microsoft Office suite. Demonstrated ability to contribute effectively within a multidisciplinary team. Demonstrated understanding of working with Electronic Medical Records systems and/or Customer Record Management systems. Experience and/or qualifications in interventions specific to alcohol and other drug presentations. What makes a difference for us:
Tertiary level qualifications in human services, behavioural/social sciences, community services, psychology, social work, counselling, or other relevant health discipline which provides a sound understanding and knowledge of assessing and working with young people at risk, or Diploma or Certificate level related qualifications along with demonstrated successful experience in an intake and assessment role within a multidisciplinary mental health setting or similar. Proof of Vaccination Status as required by Legislation, Health Directives or WMQ Policy throughout employment and prior to commencement.
