About the Role
As a member of the Stipendiary Stewards' Panel, this position is responsible for maintaining the integrity and good reputation of Harness racing throughout Western Australia. As RWWA is responsible for the conduct of all codes of racing, whilst you will specialise within the harness industry, there may be future opportunities for you to become involved within the thoroughbred code of racing. The advertisement is seeking expressions of interest from qualified persons for the role of either Harness Steward or Senior Harness Steward. The appropriate role and remuneration would be negotiated with the successful applicant commensurate with their level of experience.
Key responsibilities include: Attending race meetings as either the Steward-in-Charge or a Steward.Conducting or assisting in inquiries into potential breaches of the rules.Performing all duties in accordance with the powers outlined in the Rules of Harness Racing.Ordering and conducting random drug testing of drivers.Attending trials and track work to ensure that they are conducted properly and that the Rules are complied with.Conducting race day and other stable inspections to ascertain their suitability to house racing harness horses; ensuring appropriate security measures are in place and that the trainers' stable returns are correct and loaded.Analysing and assessing the operating methods in the racing industry to identify areas requiring development and/or improvement.About You Strong experience in all aspects of racing administration/stewardship.Experience in dealing with and handling media interviews.Leadership abilities in training, supervising, and appraising staff.Demonstrated ability to work within the boundaries set by statutory bodies, other regulations, and RWWA.In-depth knowledge of the Rules of Harness Racing and/or racing-related matters.Extensive practical and theoretical knowledge of horses.Sound computer skills – Microsoft Office suite and the in-house computer package Harvey software.Demonstrated knowledge of legal proceedings and requirements of domestic tribunal and natural justice.Knowledge of current legislation e.g. Racing Penalties Appeal Tribunal Act, Racing & Wagering Act 2003.Tertiary qualification in a relevant field and/or extensive prior experience in a senior Steward's role.Ability to use initiative, discretion, and judgement in managing and resolving racing issues and problems.Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to relate and be responsive to a broad range of people including media, executive, statutory bodies, and industry participants.What are you waiting for?
