The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) is looking for a senior criminal lawyer to take on the role of Principal Solicitor, Prosecutions in the Legal and Legislation Division.
The role is one of the Division's most senior criminal lawyers and is part of a team of four which deliver an effective prosecutions and infringements management function to complement the department's regulatory functions.
The successful applicant will be responsible for leading and managing a caseload of complex and sensitive prosecution matters, providing legal advice across a broad range of laws, including those relating to Victoria's parks, forests, natural resources, and wildlife, including providing support for priority investigations, and otherwise supporting the Managing Principal Solicitor, Prosecutions.
Key Responsibilities: Lead and manage a caseload of complex and sensitive prosecution matters. Provide strategic legal advice across various laws. Prepare for, appear, or instruct in criminal proceedings in Victorian Courts. Support the Managing Principal Solicitor in embedding a partnership approach with the Conservation Regulator. Seek opportunities for continuous improvement in the delivery of prosecutions and infringements management. Supervise and mentor other team members as required. Minimum Qualifications: An Australian lawyer within the meaning of the Legal Profession Uniform Law (Victoria), holding or eligible to hold an Australian practising certificate. Demonstrated ability to provide legal advice and case management on complex issues with minimal supervision in criminal law, evidence law, and statutory interpretation. Demonstrated experience appearing as an advocate in criminal proceedings in Victorian Courts. Work Location: 2 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne with hybrid work arrangements available.
