Role Overview We are looking for a talented Microsoft SQL Server professional with solution design and lead experience to join our Technology team.
This role includes core implementation and delivery as well as providing expertise in best practice and robust technology solution design.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, delivering, and maintaining our clients' Microsoft SQL Server database platforms, ensuring their performance, availability, and security.
As a relatively small organization, we seek a pragmatic, hands-on engineer who can work directly with customers to drive business solutions and direct delivery of Microsoft SQL Server database services.
You will work closely with our team of support engineers and database administrators (some based offshore) and client stakeholders to deliver on database system solutions and support.
You will provide critical technical support to our sales team and be required to liaise directly with both our existing and prospective clients.
Key Responsibilities Database System Design Implementation and Administration:Design, implement, and maintain Microsoft SQL database systems, including solution design, technical specifications, and support processes.Conduct routine maintenance, provide on-call support, and work through support tickets.Optimise and troubleshoot SQL Server databases to enhance performance and reliability.Database Management:Ensure data integrity, recoverability, and security across all database systems.Perform database upgrades, consolidation, migrations, and integrations.Develop and maintain support processes and database documentation.Performance Tuning:Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement solutions to improve efficiency.Conduct regular database maintenance tasks, including backups, indexing, and query optimisation.Perform system administrative activities to ensure optimal database configuration and resource allocation.Reporting and Analytics:Develop and maintain complex SQL queries and reports to support business intelligence and analytics initiatives.Work with data analysts and business users to understand reporting requirements and deliver accurate and timely insights.Implement and maintain reporting tools and dashboards.Collaboration and Support:Collaborate with software developers to integrate database functionalities with applications.Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance to resolve database-related issues.Participate in code reviews and ensure adherence to coding standards and best practices.Provide pre-sales support to our team and co-present to both existing and potential clients.Produce clearly articulated solution documentation to support these activities.Qualifications Education:Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.Experience:Minimum of 10 years of experience as an SQL Server administrator or in a similar role.Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server and Windows Server.Proven experience in writing solution design and technical specification documents.Experience in both system support and project delivery.Deep understanding of database management, including backup/recovery strategies, replication, clustering, and high-availability solutions.Experience in managing and optimizing database infrastructure, including server, storage, and network configurations.Skills:Proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server and relational database system implementation and support.Solid understanding of database performance tuning and optimisation techniques.Proficient in scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Python) for automation of database tasks.Knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., Oracle OCI, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and experience with cloud-based database services.Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.Experience with data modelling, ETL processes, and data integration.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Knowledge of version control systems like Git.Experience with database security best practices.Excellent quality control practices.Standard procedures for maintaining environments (e.g., patching, upgrades, etc.
).Certifications:Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator, Oracle Certified Professional) are preferred but not required.Who Are You?
