As Senior Scientist, you will be responsible for setting up a spatial modelling framework designed around the DayCent biogeochemical model and conduct the model parameterisation activities required to estimate the soil carbon sequestration potential of Queensland. To do so, you will need to work with your supervisor to codesign the work program and provide scientific and modelling advice and updates to the project partners.
Your role
As Senior Scientist you will:
• Design and implement a modelling framework structured around the DayCent-CABBI biogeochemical model to integrate datasets concerning soil spatial information, historic weather and climate change scenarios, land use change detection to parameterise the model, with the aim of creating a soil carbon sequestration map of Queensland compatible with the standards of the Soil and Landscape Grid of Australia.
• Develop spatial model autoparameterisation protocols to calibrate and validate the model using existing datasets.
• Develop a graphic user interface to publish an online decision support system at the end of the project.
• Develop and deliver timely and high quality, scientifically defensible products and assist with peer-reviewed publications.
• Work closely with key research, technical and policy staff (including external collaborators) to identify the best datasets to be used for model parameterisation and ensure that the datasets and methodologies adopted are state-of-the-art.
• Represent DESI in professional and scientific forums related to soil carbon modelling depending on land use change. Contribute to high quality data management and data publishing for the program and provide supporting advice and documentation to a range of stakeholders and senior managers.
• Establish and maintain networks and collaborative partnerships with internal and external clients, and a range of stakeholders relevant to the work program.
• Support and utilise the governance policy and procedure, systems activities, and processes within the work unit to fulfil all obligations under legislation including the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 and the Financial Accountability Act 2009.
• Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.
What we are looking for
We're looking for the best suited applicant for the role. We will do this by assessing your eligibility and your suitability to undertake the requirements of the role (including, where relevant, the way you carried out previous roles). We will also consider your potential to make contributions to the Department and how your engagement would support our commitment to equity, diversity, respect and inclusion.
This position requires:
• Experience with using the DayCent biogeochemical model to implement fine- and large-scale gridded spatial simulations.
• Experience with programming in the Linux HPC environment to set up and execute large, state-wide simulations.
• Solid experience with statistical modelling, management of large datasets, data quality control and assurance, remote sensing techniques, model autoparameterisation techniques and geographic information systems (preferably QGIS or ArcGIS).
• Solid understanding of soil science, nutrient cycling in agro-ecosystems and the main crop management practices adopted across Queensland's major cropping systems.
• Experience with developing graphic user interfaces for online decision support systems.
Every staff member is expected to role model leadership behaviours. This role requires the Individual Contributor leadership capabilities as outlined in the Leadership competencies for Queensland booklet.
Applications to remain current for 12 months.
