Primary Objective: Under the direction of the Senior / Chief District Ranger, manage a team to deliver land management, nature conservation, visitor activities and facilities management to support the delivery of targeted, high-quality park management outcomes, and provide support for Aboriginal and other stakeholder partnerships.
Context Statement: The current vacancy is based at Tennant Creek in the Barkly region of the NT; however, suitable applicants may be offered appointment to subsequent vacancies as they become available for up to one year from the date that advertising closes.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: Supervise a team to implement approved plans and programs, including training, mentoring and guiding less-experienced staff, volunteers, contractors, and others.Prepare work programs and rosters for the team.Develop and maintain productive joint management partnerships with Aboriginal people and other relevant stakeholders.Respond to incidents and provide first aid in accordance with emergency response procedures.Operate within a strong safety culture and implement policies and processes in keeping with NT Government protocols.Drive corporate vehicles including four-wheel drives and, on occasion, travel long distances, in remote locations and off-road.Exercise delegated powers under the Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 1976 and other relevant legislation.Selection Criteria: Essential: Significant relevant experience in a field of technical work closely related to the key duties, or a relevant qualification awarded by an Australian institution, or equivalent.Sound knowledge and understanding of natural and cultural resource management principles and the role of a ranger.Demonstrated experience in effectively leading and motivating a small team, as well as working independently.Demonstrated ability to plan, cost, and execute programs and projects within agreed timeframes and allocated resources.Good verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to interact positively and effectively with staff, visitors, and stakeholders.Knowledge and understanding of incident response procedures, including administering first aid.Knowledge and understanding of regulatory frameworks and ability to perform powers and functions under applicable legislation.Current NT drivers licence and First Aid Certificate, or the ability to obtain within a short timeframe.Desirable: Sound knowledge of vehicle, plant and equipment operation and maintenance, and relevant formal training such as chainsaw, chemical application, 4WD recovery, coxswains, etc.Further Information: The role of a ranger is diverse. Rangers may be required to transfer to other parks and/or regions, work on weekends and public holidays, be able to drive manual vehicles, work in physically demanding conditions and assist in incident management activities, including providing first aid. The majority of duties required of the position are conducted in the field.
