About This Opportunity The Senior Microscopy Services Officer works as part of the QBI Advanced Microscopy Facility (AMF) team to provide high-level, specialist technical research expertise and support to researchers. This role is primarily responsible for providing training on basic and advanced optical techniques and image processing and analysis to research scientists, performing troubleshooting and maintenance on the large suite of optical microscopes within the QBI AMF. We are seeking someone who is interested in biomedical imaging and has demonstrable competence in a variety of optical microscopy techniques.

Key responsibilities will include:

Train researchers in various microscopy techniques, including bright-field, epi-fluorescence, confocal laser-scanning, two-photon, spinning-disk, light-sheet, high-content, calcium, live-cell, structured illumination, and single-molecule localisation microscopy.
Provide researchers with training and advice in basic and advanced image analysis techniques using various software tools (e.g., Imaris, Amira, FIJI, Neurolucida, Huygens Professional Suite).
Assist with managing the daily operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of general and advanced microscopy systems.
Offer specialist scientific and technical expertise, collaborate with research groups, and custom-build optical microscopy platforms.
Contribute to research methodologies, manage research housekeeping (e.g., waste disposal, sample storage), and lead the development of a proactive safety culture.
Exercise leadership responsibilities, participate in technical leadership meetings, and train, supervise, and develop junior research staff.

About You Completion of post-graduate qualifications in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, or physics with subsequent experience in biomedical research or optical development, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
Demonstrated research-relevant knowledge and skills with expertise in a wide range of specialist and general research techniques at all stages of the research cycle
Expertise in the application of standard microscopy techniques such as bright-field and epi-fluorescence microscopy and slide scanning
Advanced knowledge of live-cell and live-animal imaging, confocal laser-scanning microscopy, two-photon laser-scanning microscopy, spinning-disk confocal microscopy, light-sheet microscopy, high-content imaging, and advanced applications such as FRAP, and FRET
Experience in super-resolution techniques such as structured illumination microscopy and single-molecule localisation microscopy
Leadership skills, including the ability to supervise and develop more junior staff
Significant experience of working in live-cell and live-animal research
Advanced technical capabilities in 2D, 3D, and 4D image analysis applications such as Imaris, Amira, CellProfiler, ImageJ/FIJI, SlideBook, NIS Elements, cellSens, and Zen
Experience in optical development
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to produce clear, succinct research documentation and the ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of research and scientific staff
