Cape York Land Council (CYLC) holds a significant legacy of advocating for the rights and representation of Traditional Owners and native title holders in the region since 1990. Its role has been pivotal in supporting the aspirations of the Aboriginal peoples of Cape York in actively engaging and participating in the management, sustainable development, and utilisation of their traditional lands.
Additionally, CYLC prioritises its organisational values and includes principles such as respect for cultural heritage, dedication to the rights of Traditional Owners, commitment to sustainable development, and fostering a sense of community and collaboration.
We have an opportunity for an experienced and motivated lawyer who is not only adept in legal matters but also thrives in a multi-disciplinary team environment. 
The position has a significant focus on working closely with the Indigenous communities of the Cape, which involves regular visits to meet with clients on their traditional lands ("on-country").
Key attributes or qualifications that might be desirable for this role could include:
Legal Expertise : At least 5 years PAE in native title, cultural heritage or mining and exploration. Commercial or property law experience in Queensland is also desirable. A background and experience in legal matters and familiarity with the Native Title Act 1993, Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003, Aboriginal Land Act 1991 or Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006. Team Collaboration : The ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team, collaborating with professionals from various backgrounds. Cultural Sensitivity and Community Engagement : Experience or a demonstrated understanding of working with Indigenous communities, understanding their cultural perspectives, and engaging respectfully with Traditional Owners. Willingness to Travel : An openness and readiness to regularly travel to meet with clients on their traditional lands. Note: Cape York Land Council (CYLC) is open to considering applications from lawyers with less experience but who are eager to gain expertise in native title matters and hold or are eligible for a practicing certificate in Queensland and who have a genuine interest in native title law.
