Court Services Victoria provides corporate services and facilities to support the performance of the judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative functions of Victoria's courts and tribunal, Judicial College and Judicial Commission.

The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) is a jurisdiction within the Court Services Victoria statutory authority and has a long history of providing justice for the people of Victoria in metropolitan and regional courts across the state. The Court determines in excess of 300,000 cases per annum at 51 venues, equating to approximately 90 percent of all cases that come before Victorian courts each year.
About the Role
The Senior Lawyer contributes to the operation and continuous improvement of the Magistrates' Court by supporting Magistrates with a range of legal work including advice and legal research, law reform and legislative policy analysis, and supporting ad hoc and special projects.
This role has a particular focus on supporting the family violence and personal safety intervention jurisdictions of the Court and therefore works closely and collaboratively with the Family Violence Branch to provide legal expertise in relation to process and procedure in these jurisdictions.
Key accountabilities include:
• Undertake research and legal analysis on complex and highly sensitive subject matter
• Provide high-level, authoritative legal and policy advice on specialist subject matter, requiring limited immediate supervision
• Draft legal documents of moderate complexity including memoranda, briefs, background papers and summaries at an advanced professional level, requiring limited immediate supervision
• Independently manages significantly complex projects and tasks under limited direction
• Engage with internal and external stakeholders in an effective, efficient, and collaborative manner
• Supervise and mentor junior staff members. • Contribute to training and professional development initiatives within the Legal Policy Unit
• Other duties as directed and commensurate with the classification of the role
Key selection criteria includes:
• Post-admission experience in private practice and/or government.
• Experience in statutory interpretation.
• Advanced knowledge of practice, procedures and processes of the Magistrates' Court is highly desirable.
• Highly developed legal research and analytical skills.
• Advanced proficiency in the delivery of well-reasoned legal analysis and opinion on complex and technical legal matters.
• Demonstrated ability to engage with stakeholders effectively.
