About Haematology The Haematology department is committed to promoting the highest levels of quality pathology services to the Austin hospital and surrounding health care facilities. Working as a reference laboratory for regional sites, the Heidelberg laboratory receives samples from many different specialties including maternity and neonates, liver and kidney transplantation, haematology and oncology, and the emergency department.
About the role Reporting to the Principal Scientist, as a Grade 2 scientist you will work within our haematology and transfusion laboratories as part of the haematology team, who are passionate about providing best practice care for our patients.
A regular day will see you: Ensuring the smooth running of the haematology or transfusion analysers throughout the day, including maintenance and running/checking QC.Crossmatching and issuing blood components and products to collecting ward staff.Validating haematology and transfusion tests.Reviewing blood films.Performing manual tests such as tube antibody investigations, red cell elutions, Kleihauer testing, and IMT testing.Liaising with PSA's, ward staff, couriers, haematology registrars, and consultants, in person and on the phone.About you You will be someone who has excellent communication skills and a commitment to quality in haematology and the transfusion laboratory. You will bring energy and drive to your work and have a keen interest in developing your skill set.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
A Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (or equivalent and/or relevant science degree).For a Grade 2 role - A minimum of 8 years' experience in a relevant medical pathology laboratory, including blood film morphology experience.Knowledge of Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs.Ability to interact and communicate effectively with colleagues including nursing and medical staff.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.The ability to prioritize and cope with stressful and emergency situations.Ability to cope with change.Flexibility to work varying shifts including weekends and night shifts.Working at Austin Health means enjoying a strong sense of purpose, engaging in meaningful work every day.
