Our researchers in the 'Transformational Bioinformatics' group use cutting-edge cloud-native genomics for health research. Joining this wider group as a Research Projects Officer, you will be a key part of our dynamic 'Genome Insights' team, which focuses on building novel digital products that leverage new technologies in cloud computing and machine learning. These products deliver translational impact in the fields of precision medicine, environment, and agriculture across academic, government, and commercial sectors.
In this multi-faceted role, you will work closely with internal and external stakeholders in the areas of both precision population and environmental genomics. You will apply your genome analytics and statistical genetics domain knowledge to evaluate new bioinformatics technology for the annotation and prioritisation of clinically relevant genomic variants and develop novel research approaches for multi-omic analysis, as well as tackling other emerging issues.

Applications will be assessed across two capability levels, and the successful candidate will be appointed at the level commensurate with their skills and experience. Your duties will include:Developing and evaluating innovative concepts, theories, tools, and techniques related to genomic data analysis, genomic variant prioritisation, population and environmental genomics, and pharmacogenomics.Under supervision, designing, developing, and adapting experimental methods and systems, software, and/or user experience, requiring high levels of initiative, ingenuity, and skills (some of which are outside a single discipline).Developing novel techniques to produce enhanced results, providing researchers with new or improved approaches to research or technological problems.Addressing problems promptly and in a constructive manner.Participating in work which is highly involved due to unique or unusual features and complications, requiring the creation of original user experiences, the design & development of original technologies, and/or the development of original experimental or observational techniques and insightful interpretation of data.Actively contributing to communicating research or technological results in internal and external forums and, where applicable, contributing to and/or generating scientific papers.Location: Adelaide SA; Brisbane QLD; Canberra ACT; Melbourne VIC; or Sydney NSW
Salary: AU$96K – AU$123K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation (across two capability levels) Tenure: Specified Term of 3 years; Full-time

To be considered you will need:Minimum qualification of a Bachelor's degree, and/or an equivalent combination of qualifications and work experience in a relevant field such as Bioinformatics or Statistical Genetics.Demonstrated practical experience with genome analytics and statistical genetics applications in humans or the environment, such as GWAS or eQTL.Evidence of advanced data analytics and programming capabilities in more than one language relevant for bioinformatics (e.g., Python, Java, C++, Scala, BASH, R, Julia).Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative, and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.To be considered at the higher classification level, the successful candidate will also need at least 3 years of postgraduate research/work experience.To be eligible to apply for this role, you must be either an:
Australian or New Zealand Citizen;Australian Permanent Resident;Australian Temporary Resident, currently residing in Australia, with an existing valid visa and unrestricted work rights for the full duration of the term (at least until May/June 2028) and no requirement for visa sponsorship.
Appointment to this role is subject to provision of a national police check and may be subject to other security/medical/character requirements.
