The role
We are looking for a Regional Inspector to improve the welfare of animals through investigating reports of animal cruelty or neglect, educating both the community and industry on animal care and welfare and the enforcement of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulation 2012 and associated Codes of Practice.
In addition, the role is responsible for emergency, biosecurity and disaster response under the direction of NSW Department of Primary Industries and the Chief Inspector.
Your main responsibilities include:
Investigate animal cruelty complaints as per the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (POCTAA) 1979 Inspect animal trades as per the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulation (POCTAR) 2012 and Codes of Practice Preparation of reports, statements, briefs of evidence and court attendance notices for prosecutions Attend Local and District Court for mentions and hearings and give accurate evidence as required Preparation, application and execution of search warrants Operation and maintenance of Sheltermate Database Control evidence and animals in custody Interpret and apply Animal Welfare Legislation and Regulations providing accurate advice, information and guidance Issue penalty infringement notices (Fines) Conduct pro-active animal trades inspections and audits in relation to NSW Legislation and Regulations Deploy at request and direction of Department of Primary Industries in the event of flood, bushfire or biosecurity event Participate in community engagement activities and AWL NSW education programs Educate all levels of the community in responsible and appropriate animal welfare and treatment Educate and assist community and industry regarding animal welfare legislation, regulations and codes of practice Educate community and industry regarding animal welfare in emergency events and disaster preparedness About You
Background in either animal welfare, law enforcement, or compliance Experience in companion animal care, husbandry and handling, including horses and livestock Strong commitment to animal welfare and knowledge of animals, both large and small Aptitude for reading, interpreting and applying legislation Demonstrated experience in the enforcement of legislation, the collection and control of evidence including taking witness statements Knowledge of the appropriate legislation including (but not limited to) Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979, Regulations 2012, Companion Animals Act and Codes of Practice desirable Knowledge of infringement processing including the ability to adjudicate on representations received, preferably with SEINS training desirable Strong communication skills with the ability to engage and influence a variety of different people, as well as experience in conflict resolution A good problem solver with tact and diplomacy skills Ability to work well under pressure Able to work autonomously and yet also be an effective team member Ability to effectively give advice and educate the public on animal welfare issues Ability and willingness to represent AWL NSW in the media Good physical strength, agility, fitness and resilience Travel will be required Tetanus, Rabies and Q Fever vaccination required Why You'll Love It Here
