The role We are looking for a Regional Inspector to improve the welfare of animals through investigating reports of animal cruelty or neglect, educating both the community and industry on animal care and welfare and the enforcement of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulation 2012 and associated Codes of Practice.
In addition, the role is responsible for emergency, biosecurity and disaster response under the direction of NSW Department of Primary Industries and the Chief Inspector.
Your main responsibilities include: Investigate animal cruelty complaints as per the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (POCTAA) 1979Inspect animal trades as per the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulation (POCTAR) 2012 and Codes of PracticePreparation of reports, statements, briefs of evidence and court attendance notices for prosecutionsAttend Local and District Court for mentions and hearings and give accurate evidence as requiredPreparation, application and execution of search warrantsOperation and maintenance of Sheltermate DatabaseControl evidence and animals in custodyInterpret and apply Animal Welfare Legislation and Regulations providing accurate advice, information and guidanceIssue penalty infringement notices (Fines)Conduct pro-active animal trades inspections and audits in relation to NSW Legislation and RegulationsDeploy at request and direction of Department of Primary Industries in the event of flood, bushfire or biosecurity eventParticipate in community engagement activities and AWL NSW education programsEducate all levels of the community in responsible and appropriate animal welfare and treatmentEducate and assist community and industry regarding animal welfare legislation, regulations and codes of practiceEducate community and industry regarding animal welfare in emergency events and disaster preparednessAbout You Background in either animal welfare, law enforcement, or complianceExperience in companion animal care, husbandry and handling, including horses and livestockStrong commitment to animal welfare and knowledge of animals, both large and smallAptitude for reading, interpreting and applying legislationDemonstrated experience in the enforcement of legislation, the collection and control of evidence including taking witness statementsKnowledge of the appropriate legislation including (but not limited to) Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979, Regulations 2012, Companion Animals Act and Codes of Practice desirableKnowledge of infringement processing including the ability to adjudicate on representations received, preferably with SEINS training desirableStrong communication skills with the ability to engage and influence a variety of different people, as well as experience in conflict resolutionA good problem solver with tact and diplomacy skillsAbility to work well under pressureAble to work autonomously and yet also be an effective team memberAbility to effectively give advice and educate the public on animal welfare issuesAbility and willingness to represent AWL NSW in the mediaGood physical strength, agility, fitness and resilienceTravel will be requiredTetanus, Rabies and Q Fever vaccination requiredWhy You'll Love It Here At AWL NSW, we offer competitive pay and benefits, including access to an Employee Assistance Program, retail discounts, and professional development opportunities.
