Ranger In Charge

Details of the offer

The Opportunity
The focus of the Ranger in Charge role is project management and delivery within the Northern Area of the Great Barrier Reef and Marine Parks Region. This involves leading and assisting in the delivery of a range of priority projects on islands and within the marine park.
In this role, you may be responsible for or assist in any stage of a project's lifecycle, from initial scoping and feasibility through to full completion. Depending on requirements and operational capacity, project components may be delivered internally by the project team, externally contracted out, or through a combination of both.
The project team currently focuses on infrastructure capital works and Traditional Owner engagement. However, the team may also be involved in or lead projects across any of the region's focus areas, depending on operational needs and regional priorities.

A purpose and a challenge that matter
To be successful in this role, you'll require a high level of initiative, leadership in all facets of project delivery, the ability to offer practical solutions while adhering to departmental policies, and the ability to maintain relationships with partners and stakeholders. Experience in protected area management, including islands and marine environments, as well as project delivery in these contexts, will be highly advantageous.

The position may be based in Cairns or Townsville, covering the Northern Great Barrier Reef from Cape Upstart (South of Townsville) to Cape York Peninsula. Regular and extended travel to other locations may be necessary. The role involves field trips aboard a modern, well-equipped vessel fleet, which may include extended periods away from the home base and nights at sea.

Good physical health and the willingness to work in challenging climatic conditions is essential for this role. Whilst carrying out field duties, you should be prepared for exposure to sun, hot and humid tropical conditions, fire and smoke, chemicals and poisons, as well as long hours, including weekends and nights, often in remote areas.
