Principal Government Lawyer

The department is seeking a Principal Government Lawyer to co-manage and lead the Skills Program Advice Team.
You will work closely with our clients in the development, implementation and administration of Government policies and programs relating to the Skills areas including:
Providing statutory interpretation advice on legislation (including the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, VET Student Loans Act 2016, Student Identifiers Act 2014, Australian Apprenticeship Support Loans Act 2014 and Jobs and Skills Australia Act 2022).
Advising on legal risks associated with program design.
Providing advice on administrative decision-making.
Drafting legislative and non-legislative instruments.
Advising on and the carriage of debt recovery and litigation matters.
Assisting with legislative development, including instructing the Office of Parliamentary Counsel.
Assisting clients in preparing briefs to the Executive and Ministers.

The key duties of the position include:The duties and responsibilities for this role include providing a broad range of legal services to the department's Skills and Training Group as set out under the heading "the Role" and demonstrating the capabilities listed under the heading "Capabilities" below.
The duties and responsibilities for this role will also include complying with obligations in Commonwealth legislation and policies where relevant, for example in the Public Service Act 1999 and the Legal Services Directions 2017.
