The Phlebotomy service at Princess Alexandra Hospital is located on Ground Level of Building 1, Ipswich Road, Woolloongabba. It provides a specimen collection service to outpatients and inpatients and 2 off-site clinics at Inala and Burke Street.Communicate clearly and respectfully with patients, hospital staff, and colleagues to ensure the correct collection of appropriate blood and non-blood specimens from inpatients and outpatients as requested. Perform duties that include the restocking of pathology consumables, maintaining clean work areas, and assisting where directed by Phlebotomy Supervisors.Key Competencies (Role Specific Criteria)Ability to participate in an established roster covering a range of shifts within the hours of 6:30am to 10:00pm, 7 days a week including weekdays, weekends, and public holidays where rostered. The successful applicant will be expected to work a combination of shifts within each fortnight.Flexibility to work additional hours or extra shifts above the minimum contract hours where necessary to support patient care.Demonstrate experience or ability to acquire experience in the correct procedures of specimen collection including the application of established policies and guidelines with minimal supervision.Demonstrate knowledge or the ability to acquire knowledge of standard precautions in dealing with patients and biological specimens.Proven ability to follow instructions and work conscientiously and accurately.An established history of well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively in a team environment.Ability to function and work efficiently as a team member to achieve organisational goals.Prioritise inpatient and outpatient workloads to meet testing Turn Around Times and collection key performance indicators.Knowledge or ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations, pathology terminology and abbreviations, test names and specimen types.Demonstrate a high level of commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement.Qualifications, Registrations and Other RequirementsA Certificate III in Pathology Specimen Collection or higher would be highly regarded.The candidate will be required to stand or walk for the majority of the shift, up to 8 hours or more at times while moving a phlebotomy trolley throughout the wards and hospital campus.Please detail any visa conditions you may have if you are not a permanent resident of Australia.We understand that some people may require adjustments to the workplace or the way the work is performed.
