Location ProfileJennings Street School is a prep to year 12 autism specific school with 120 students ranging in ages from 5-18. There is a strong focus on student well-being and building effective home school partnerships. Professional Learning Teams and an integrated service model including Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and Psychologists form the basis for quality teaching, building staff instructional capacity, high standards of professional engagement, a strong sense of collegiality, and a culture of excellence. Jennings Street School currently has 16 classrooms across three learning centres and a team of Allied Health that work within each centre.
Selection CriteriaAbility to deliver a comprehensive student centred Occupational Therapy service to individuals with Autism in an educational setting, including assessment and reporting.Experience or knowledge in providing and supporting interventions that address sensory processing, motor planning, and functional skill.Experience or knowledge in utilising sensory and motor assessments such as The Sensory Profile, The Sensory Processing Measure (SPM), and Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (BOT2).Experience or interest in developing social and early play skills in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.Demonstrated ability to participate effectively in a team environment to develop collaborative working relationships with school staff, families, and community services from a diverse range of cultures.Demonstrated commitment to following established school timelines and priorities working with the school leadership team.RoleThe Occupational Therapists work alongside teachers, assistants, and other therapists in classrooms and with families and community services to support students' access to and participation in learning. Services primarily focus on meeting the students' sensory, sensorimotor, and functional needs within a school environment. The Occupational Therapist will provide support to classroom staff, including discussion, modelling, and guidance regarding the implementation of recommendations to enhance participation and independence.
As part of the interdisciplinary team at Jennings Street School, the Occupational Therapists use developmental and social interactive interventions in the student's school environment. Interventions are focused on collaboration and consultation with teaching staff to enhance a student's communication, social and play skills. The Occupational Therapists participate in assessment of sensory processing, gross and fine motor skills using standardised, observational, and formal assessment.
ResponsibilitiesProvide professional knowledge and recommendations while working in collaboration with staff to assist students to manage their sensory, sensorimotor, and regulatory needs.Implement good practice Autism specific positive behaviour support (PBS) in a school setting.Utilise formal assessment to identify, measure, and support appropriate intervention.Work as part of a Professional Learning Team to provide professional input and recommendations that identify appropriate educational supports for students.Identify educational activities and/or environments that may require therapeutic support or modification.Provide professional development to staff of the school and the external community as requested/appropriate.Maintain and upgrade therapy resources in consultation with the multidisciplinary team.Liaise with community service organisations including DHS, hospitals, and other specialty services and professionals.Ensure a high standard of work as guided by evidence practice and sound clinical reasoning.Meet regularly with the multidisciplinary team and other school staff in structured meetings regarding ongoing development and strategic planning of service provision to students, staff, parents, and community agencies.Participate in continual professional development using evidence-based & reflective practice.Keep accurate and relevant file notes for individual students and perform administrative duties.Who May ApplyIndividuals with the aptitude, experience, and/or qualifications to fulfil the specific requirements of the position. The applicant will have a degree in Occupational Therapy or recognised equivalent, as a mandatory requirement of this position. Registration with Professional body (AHPRA) is required.
