Location ProfileMonash Special Developmental School is a government school located in the North Eastern Victorian Region in the City of Monash. Monash SDS provides an educational program for children with a moderate to profound intellectual disability and multiple disabilities including autism spectrum disorder from the age of 2.8 to 18 years old. Currently, student enrolments are around 155. It has been on the current site for 11 years in a well-resourced purpose-built facility.
Monash SDS is gold accredited in School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS), AMAZE accredited and e-Smart accredited.
Students across the school at Monash SDS are taught using the Victorian Curriculum. Curriculum-based individual learning plans are developed for each student and are taught using a variety of high impact teaching strategies and specialised curriculum supports including the STAR (Strategies for Teaching Based on Autism Research) and Links Program.

Selection CriteriaSC1 Appropriate experience as an Occupational Therapist working with children with a disability.SC2 Ability to work independently to provide individual and group-based programs in the classroom setting.SC3 Be able to participate effectively in a collaborative multi-disciplinary team.SC4 Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to consult and advise other professionals providing services to students.SC5 Ability to adapt the provision of services to children with special needs and their families.SC6 Understanding the impact of intellectual disabilities on children and their families, and a demonstrated sensitivity in communication with families of children with special needs.RoleTo provide Occupational Therapy services to children with disabilities at Monash Special Developmental School and support the staff and families in providing the best possible educational outcomes for each child.
ResponsibilitiesUnder the direction of the Principal: Conduct appropriate assessments of students 2.8 years - 18 years and management of student's developmental skills.Planning and implementing appropriate programs to meet the needs of students.Work cooperatively with the other Occupational Therapist in sharing case load and departmental responsibilities as required.Provide written and verbal feedback/reports on assessments of students including those required as supporting documentation for new applications for the Program for Students with Disabilities.Work collaboratively with teaching staff and parents to develop appropriate goals for fine motor, gross motor, independent living skills and sensory issues.Assess and prescribe equipment and splinting as appropriate for use at school and in the community and to source and apply for funding support as required.Provide feedback and home programs as required to parents regarding their child's needs.Support the implementation and understanding principles of the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Plans.Occupational Therapy Goals:Provide Occupational Therapy programs within the school environment as part of the multi-disciplinary team.Conduct in-service programs to staff and parent groups on independent living, fine motor and sensory issues and equipment issues as required.Liaise with parents/carers regarding their children's needs.Work independently to develop, implement and evaluate class-based programs that incorporate therapeutic interventions and support student learning.Meet regularly with members of the therapy team for discussion of therapy service delivery and case presentation and other school items as required by the Principal.Meet with the Principal for professional review and discussion of student needs etc.Attend staff meetings and participate in committees of discussion and planning as required.Liaise with service providers, welfare agencies and other relevant professionals as required for ongoing management of student referral.Liaise with and provide support to other community organisations in relation to student's needs, home visits and modifications.Assist with the supervision of Occupational Therapy students.Have a thorough knowledge of safety procedures for students travelling on the bus.Who May ApplyIndividuals with the aptitude, experience and qualifications to fulfill the specific requirements of the position. Applicants are required to have an approved qualification in Occupational Therapy and hold a current Working with Children Check.
