Full timeReference S625Southern.IML Pathology has a vacancy for a full time medical scientist (SO) in the Microbiology department of our Wollongong laboratory. As part of Sonic Healthcare, Southern.IML Pathology provides a diagnostic pathology service covering an area from Engadine in Southern Sydney to Narooma on the far South Coast of NSW. Our practice provides a very important community service for this region and the successful applicant must be committed to working in a regional area. For the successful applicant, this position provides an opportunity to increase or further develop their scientific skills and knowledge in the field of Microbiology.The laboratory operates on shift work over a weekly cycle offering a wide range of testing procedures. The successful applicant will be working within a cohesive department using state of the art technology in a pathology practice that has served the region for 40 years. Southern.IML Pathology has a strong reputation for being innovative in the pathology and quality management fields. Contributing to ongoing research is an important focus within the practice.The successful applicant will be working in a fast-paced department and will ideally have experience working in the microbiology field.The position requires:Strong scientific skills and excellent communication skills.Be proactive in dealing with customers (internal and external).Accuracy demonstrating the ability to pay attention to details.Experience in processing both Microbiology and Molecular Biology samples from initial set up to the reporting stage.Experience in microscopy.Experience in plate reading bacterial and fungal cultures.Experience in the use of MALDI-TOF and Vitek.Experience in interpreting Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (including using EUCAST guidelines).Interpreting and analysing results from clinical samples.Knowledge of quality control and experience in quality assurance programs (QAP).Possible participation in the out of hours on call roster, performing diagnostic testing in core disciplinary areas of Microbiology and Molecular Biology to meet on call requirements.Experience in faecal culture set up and culture reading and reporting would be highly regarded.Applicants with a relevant bachelor degree qualification and at least 2 years experience in a pathology laboratory are preferred (particularly Microbiology experience), or have been assessed as a medical laboratory scientist by AIMS.For enquiries contact the Microbiology/ Molecular Biology Head of Department Abbey Davison on 02 42247447.Applications close: Friday 20 December 2024
