The Ultrasound Special Skills post at Lyell McEwin Hospital is the longest established Ultrasound Special Skills post in South Australia.
The post is specifically aimed at Advanced trainees in Emergency Medicine who wish to develop a special interest in Point of Care Ultrasound.

The ultrasound Special Skills post is available at LMH in order to enhance a trainee's skills and knowledge in clinician performed ultrasound.
The post is typically held over 6 calendar months and involves half of the trainee's time being spent in ultrasound training and half as an emergency trainee.
This means that at the end of 6 months, a 3-month Special skills rotation will be complete.
In certain select circumstances, the position may be extended to a 6-month term over one calendar year.
The basic structure of the term will consist of 2 scanning shifts and 2 clinical shifts per week.

Scan shifts are normally overseen by a Senior Emergency Consultant with extensive experience in Emergency Ultrasound, holding a Diploma in Diagnostic Ultrasound (DDU).
This is supported by several other experienced staff, over 10 of whom hold a Certificate in Clinician Performed Ultrasound.
The trainee will be allocated a dedicated ultrasound machine for their exclusive use during the term and will have access to a variety of other machines, allowing experience across a broad range of machine types and manufacturers.
Image review occurs on a dedicated DICOM viewer within the department, with feedback on image quality and reporting, as well as one-on-one discussion of challenging cases.

The keys goals of the ultrasound post are:
Achieve proficiency in the "core" ACEM modules ie.
EFAST, AAA, FELS, lung and procedural needle guidance.
The trainee is encouraged to complete the CCPU in these modules during the term but is not required to due to the financial costs involved.
The trainee will also be exposed to extended applications and uses of ultrasound, as applied to Emergency Medicine.
This can therefore include, but is not restricted to: full abdomen, DVT and vascular, MSK and soft tissue, nerve and regional blocks, more comprehensive echocardiography, limited gynae and obstetric, foreign body identification, ocular.
Training will encompass an ability to combine these skills to better diagnose and assess response to treatment in highly challenging resuscitation cases.
The trainee will be expected to be involved in quality improvement processes and education; they will be required to complete a project in this regard, with the expectation that this will be presented at a scientific conference or submitted for journal publication.
Integral to this post is image review, reporting and record keeping.
The trainee will learn about managerial aspects of running an ultrasound program and proficiency in Information Technology is desirable but not essential.
As a vital member of our healthcare team, you will play a crucial role in providing exceptional care to patients in critical situations.
Utilising your advanced ultrasound skills, you will contribute to accurate and timely diagnoses, enabling swift and effective treatment plans.
