Medical Director, Sexual Assault and Domestic and Family Violence - Hunter New England Local Health District The primary purpose of the role is to provide high quality diagnostic and consultative specialty medical and forensic services in responding to sexual assault and domestic and family violence (DFV). This includes providing specialised clinical support to assist in the prevention and response to violence, abuse and neglect, as well as participating in teaching, research, quality improvement and administrative activities within the Violence, Abuse and Neglect (VAN) Service and other district health services (e.g. Emergency Department) as required. It also includes maintaining and extending the districts and state-wide provision of high-quality medical and forensic care to victims of sexual violence and fulfilling the roles and responsibilities of the Medical Director SA and DFV outlined in NSW Health's Responding to Sexual Assault (adult and child) Policy and Procedures.
The role leads and participates in ongoing development and implementation of a statewide integrated psychosocial, medical and forensic domestic and family violence crisis model; this includes contribution to the development of minimum education and credentialing requirements needed to support the expanded scope of practice for doctors and nurses to respond to domestic and family violence.
Where you'll be working The Medical Director SA and DFV is a vital leadership position responsible for the strategic and clinical development of medical and forensic service provision for adults and adolescents who have experienced sexual assault and/or domestic and family violence. The position ensures the overall quality assurance of medical and forensic responses delivered by services across the district. The Medical Director SA and DFV spearheads a small team of Sexual Assault Medical Leads who have site specific responsibility to clinically support, advise and develop local sexual assault nurse examiners and GPVMOs. The local examiners work in integrated and collaborative ways with psycho-social clinicians to provide wrap-around care to victim-survivors.
The Medical Director SA and DFV position is based in Newcastle. It is operationally managed and supported by the District Manager VAN and professionally supported by the HNELHD Executive Director for Medical Services. HNE LHD is known for being a leader in the provision of medical and forensic responses to sexual assault and domestic violence. As such, this role presents an exciting opportunity to work closely with the Ministry of Health, other state-wide leads, districts and networks, the Education Centre Against Violence and the PARVAN Medical and Forensic Advisory Group in providing statewide leadership and support functions for medical and forensic services across NSW.
HNELHD is considered a centre of excellence in the way it has developed and continues to enhance the quality of medical and forensic services in relation to sexual assault and domestic and family violence. It is a diverse district providing health care to populations in metropolitan, regional, rural and remote areas and has therefore become adept at evolving medical and forensic services that are patient centred, flexible and sustainable. With some of the highest rates of sexual assault and domestic violence in some of our communities, we are passionate about providing timely, trauma informed and culturally safe care while also building and supporting our workforce. We are proud of the expertise and professionalism in our existing workforce of examiners of which this role will lead and provide strategic direction to the ongoing growth in medical and forensic service provision.
The role is provided access to TESL to support ongoing professional development and encourage to develop professional connections and collaborate with other district and statewide clinical leaders in this field.
Mandatory requirements of this role include: Current medical practitioner, registered, or eligible for registration, with: Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), Fellow of the Faculty of Clinical Forensic Medicine of the RCPA/Fellow of the Australasian Chapter of Sexual Health Medicine of the (RACP)/ Royal Australasian College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and/or other equivalent specialist recognition as provided for in the NSW Staff Specialists (State) Award with relevant experience and recognised qualifications in Sexual Assault Medicine. Qualifications and/or professional experience in understanding of the nature and impacts of DFV and complex trauma and a requirement to undertake ECAV Course MF1425 at a minimum. If no qualification is recognised under the above but has obtained an appropriate higher qualification in his/her specialty acceptable to the Employer after consideration by the Medical and Dental Advisory Committee of the Employer.
Demonstrated knowledge of integrated sexual assault service delivery and management of adult sexual assault, including responses to crisis presentations, medical follow-up and adult wellbeing consultations.
Proven ability to provide leadership, advanced negotiation skills and the ability to develop and maintain a cohesive patient centred service.
Preparedness to support and participate in a 24/7 on-call service which responds to interagency partners (NSW Police), including on-call rosters already existing or established, if requested and credentialed, and provision of ongoing training and support to examiners.
Demonstrated expertise in managing and supervising medico-legal work, including review of Expert Witness Certificates, providing expert witness evidence and testimony in court, preparing examiners to provide evidence and testimony and debriefing examiners.
Evidence of being a manager, including ability to be flexible and cope with a changing health system, past leadership and management experience and previous safety and quality improvement activities.
Evidence of being a professional, including continued professional development, peer review and other forms of clinical governance.
Evidence of being an advocate, including contributions to improving individual and societal health.
